Job summary

Spokane Public Schools is seeking a School Academic Support Specialist to collaborate with teachers, families, and community partners to support at-risk students and improve attendance and engagement.

You will coordinate with Student Services, implement strategies aligned with the School Improvement Plan, and arrange wrap-around services to meet social, emotional and academic needs, often beyond regular hours.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
  • Experience in public school system, especially with high school students.
  • Experience using data to guide intervention and support strategies.
  • Ability to interact with diverse students, families and staff in a confidential manner.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.

The School Academic Support Specialist School will initiate, facilitate, and maintain programs and strategies that are aligned with Schools Improvement Plan. The specialist, in collaboration with Student Services, will develop and further the wisest use of school/community resources to create optimal positive impact. This will be done by enhancing community and individual assets, meeting critical social/emotional needs, and enhancing student academic performance, while supporting the needs of the classroom teacher.

SALARY: LEVEL 22 on the Educational Support Salary Schedule. Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public school. DOWNLOAD SALARY SCHEDULE

  2. Coordinate with attendance office at various schools to determine youth with patterns of absenteeism or tardiness.
  3. Intervene with strategies to reduce tardiness-example: collaborate with Attendance Board.
  4. Working with staff to make sure students are in support programs that meet their individual needs.
  5. Work with parents to support social/academic needs of students.
  6. Develop partnerships to promote student learning.
  7. Would participate in parent connection efforts such as Open House, Student Led Conferences, etc.
  8. Coordinate parent community family dinners.
  9. Work with teachers to identify youth needs, create and coordinate with counselor and other school specialists to find appropriate services for the student.
  10. Coordinate resources coming into school site and community, including primary health, mental health, arts, recreation, after school, and other resources.
  11. Coordinating with community organizations to provide wrap-around services for students and accessing additional areas the students might need.
  12. Provide supervision and coordination of programing during and beyond the school day for students and families during extended daily hours and year long.
  13. Willingness to work before or after school hours, when necessary.
  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. Bachelor's degree.
  3. Understanding of and experience working with education, or human services systems.
  4. Experience working with in the public school system, especially with high school students. Understanding and knowledge of what intervention services are accessible.
  5. Experience working with data to guide decision making for best intervention/support strategies.
  6. Experience working with community neighborhood organizations, community agencies, and volunteer programs. Requires excellent networking and training skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to interact positively and in a professional manner with a diverse group of students, parents, staff, and community members in a confidential manner.
  8. Experience in program development, implementation, and/or evaluation.
  9. Ability to relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and special needs.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
  11. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and clearly in both written and oral form.
  12. Experience with computers and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or publishing software.

  2. Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays – Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement (Collective Bargaining Agreements) as negotiated.
