Job summary

Akron Public Schools Transportation Division seeks a Substitute Bus Driver for the 2026‑2027 school year to transport students safely to and from school and events.

This on‑call role offers guaranteed hours and may lead to contracted openings with medical benefits. Training is provided for inexperienced drivers, with eligibility for a School Employees Retirement System position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must obtain Ohio Class B CDL with S and P endorsements.
• Must pass BMV licensure check and FBI background check.
• Must pass Ohio T8 Driver Physical and pre-employment drug/substance testing.

Responsibilities

• Safely transport students to and from school and events.
• Complete pre/post trip inspections and ensure vehicle safety.
• Assist with student evacuation in emergencies.
• May transport wheelchair-bound students in ADA-compliant buses.
• Work on an as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or G.E.D.;
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age;
• Must be willing to obtain a valid and unencumbered State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License with S and P endorsements;
• Must satisfactorily complete a complete BMV licensure check and Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation/FBI background check;
• Must satisfactorily complete the required Ohio T8 Driver Physical process and pre-employment drug/substance and alcohol testing.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and all school‑related events. The driver must operate the school bus safely in all weather conditions and perform a detailed pre/post trip inspection. The driver must be able to physically assist with student evacuation in the event of an emergency. The driver may be required to transport wheelchair‑bound students on a bus designed for handicap student transportation. This position works on an as‑needed basis with no regularly assigned schedule and/or guarantee of a minimum number of scheduled hours per week.
