Job summary

Amazon’s Intermodal (AZIM) Operations team seeks Transportation Specialists to join this growing group. You will coordinate intermodal loads, work with shippers, carriers, and internal teams to ensure on-time pickup and delivery, and resolve disruptions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Create weekly business narratives outlining intermodal performance and present findings to senior leadership.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives to re-engineer intermodal workflows and drive root cause elimination of defects.
  • Resolve real-time disruptions including container movement failures and scheduling conflicts.
  • Escalate system issues and data variances to technology and program teams with follow-through.
  • Develop and own intermodal KPIs to drive operational excellence and financial outcomes.
  • Lead and develop a team of operations associates through coaching and performance management.
  • Partner with transportation technology teams to scope business and functional requirements for tool enhancements.
  • Support new lane launches, shipper onboarding, and capacity planning with Sales and Supply Chain teams.

Amazon’s Intermodal (AZIM) Operations team is seeking highly skilled and motivated Transportation Specialists to join this rapidly growing team. AZIM Operations drives the end to end operational execution of all loads (internal and external) shipped on our 1P network. The team supports regions and shippers across the Supply Chain network and is tasked with ensuring on-time pickup and delivery of freight from vendors, Amazon fulfillment centers (FCs), rail yards and shipper hubs. In the case of disruptions, the Operations team is responsible for addressing the disruption, keeping all stakeholders informed and ensuring timely resolution of the issue. The AZIM Operations team is the first line of defense in understanding network trends, delays, dwells and other exceptions that impact AZIM’s ability to deliver a world class transportation product that serves its customers on time.

Key job responsibilities
  • Maintain daily communication with external partners (shippers, drayage carriers, Class I railroad partners) and internal stakeholders (Program Managers, Amazon Freight Sales, Supply Chain, Fulfillment Centers, Middle Mile Routing, and Managed Carrier programs) to ensure seamless intermodal execution
  • Create weekly business narratives outlining intermodal performance, variances to volume/cost/service goals, and present findings in WBR/MBR forums to senior leadership
  • Pull and analyze data from internal databases (SQL, Excel, internal transportation systems) to monitor container utilization, drayage performance, load execution, and tour optimization metrics
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to re-engineer intermodal workflows (e.g., container scheduling, drayage assignment, tour split reduction) and drive root cause elimination of operational defects
  • Resolve real-time disruptions including container movement failures, drayage breaks, carrier rejections, and scheduling conflicts while minimizing customer impact in a fast-paced environment
  • Escalate system issues, data variances, and operational breakdowns to relevant technology and program teams; own follow-through to ensure timely resolution
  • Develop and own intermodal KPIs (on-time performance, container dwell, cost per load, empty mile reduction) to drive operational excellence and financial outcomes
  • Lead and develop a team of operations associates through regular 1:1 coaching, performance management, and real-time operational direction
  • Partner with Amazon transportation technology teams to scope business and functional requirements for tool enhancements and new feature development
  • Support new lane launches, shipper onboarding, and capacity planning in coordination with Sales and Supply Chain teams
A day in the life

The AZIM Transportation Operations Lead facilitates the continued flow of Amazon’s supply chain by passing information to key stakeholders and resolving disruptions that impact customer experience or the flow of information impacting performance and delivery. The Specialist addresses or escalates any concerns arising during the lifecycle of freight leaving rail ramps, shipper hubs, Amazon fulfillment centers, or transiting between rail to OTR carriers. The day-to-day role requires the specialist to provide resolutions by researching and querying internal tools and making real-time decisions in accordance with their guidance and standard work processes. In this role, the Transportation Operations Specialist will be able to understand the process and requirements/be able to analyze data and notice trends and be able to drive Customer Experience without compromising on time. This position will need to have the experience to understand Logistics and should be able to communicate clearly in the written and oral form.

Basic Qualifications

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
