San Jose, CA, US

Salary Range: $18.45 To $18.45 Hourly

Position Title: Student Assistant

Position Department: Transportation Solutions

Full/Part-Time: Part-Time

Wage: $18.45 per hour

Reports To: Commute Coordinator and Department Manager

Associated Students’ (A.S.) mission is to support and represent the students of San José State University by continuing the organization’s legacy of student advocacy and leadership; to enhance SJSU students’ education through high quality programs and services; and to prepare students as they move towards a thoughtful and purposeful life after graduation.

A.S. is a non-profit auxiliary corporation serving the students of San Jose State University whose primary source of funding is from mandatory student body fees. A.S. Departments include the Cesar Chavez Community Action Center, Child Development Center, General Services Center, Human Resources, Information Technology, Events, Marketing, Print & Technology Center, Student Government, and Transportation Solutions.

Position Summary

The Student Assistant plays a key role in promoting and implementing Transportation Solutions (TS) programs that make sustainable commuting easier, more affordable, and more accessible for the SJSU community. Established over two decades ago and funded by student fees, TS is dedicated to reducing single-occupant driving to campus, encouraging the use of public transit, and helping students travel safely and affordably so they can focus on their education—not their commute.

In this position, the Student Assistant serves as the first point of contact for students and community members who visit the front desk, call, or email. As the face of our department, this role helps create a welcoming and professional first impression while assisting commuters with their transportation needs. The Student Assistant contributes to the creation of marketing/informational/wayfinding materials, responds to student inquiries, provides personalized trip-planning support, supports data analysis for transit programs, and engages the campus community through creative outreach activities.

Collaboration is key in this role. The Student Assistant works closely with the Associated Students Marketing Department, the General Services Center, other A.S. and SJSU departments, and occasionally with outside agencies and community partners to ensure programs and services are effectively coordinated, promoted, and accessible to all.

Essential Functions

  • Greet and assist visitors in person, by phone, and via email courteously and professionally.

Respond to customer inquiries and complaints by identifying issues, providing appropriate solutions, and ensuring timely resolution.

Handle sensitive documents with discretion and maintain compliance with confidentiality policies and regulations, including FERPA.

Maintain departmental records and perform data entry and updates as needed.

Organize department files, maintain a clean office environment, and monitor office and promotional inventory supplies.

Provide transportation information and travel planning guidance to students, promoting alternatives to driving alone.

Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies on events and program coordination.

Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating marketing strategies, outreach campaigns, and special projects.

Participate in and help coordinate outreach activities, representing the department through event planning, presentations, and tabling. Updated 11.2025

Support the promotion of annual commute surveys and assist in soliciting prize donations from local businesses.

Assist in creating and planning social media content and digital outreach efforts.

Draft written communications, including campus-wide emails and promotional messages.

Participate in all staff meetings and regular one-on-ones with supervisor(s).
