Job summary

Ideal candidates will have over 8 years of experience in transportation and a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. The role involves data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and technical traffic engineering tasks, with a salary range of $100,000 to $150,000 depending on qualifications.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in planning, consulting, and compliance in transportation.
  • Professional certification (AICP or PTOE) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support multimodal transportation planning projects.
  • Conduct data-driven analyses for planning recommendations.
  • Perform technical traffic engineering work.
  • Engage with stakeholders through various public engagement activities.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to develop solutions.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide feedback.

Transportation Planner

Job Locations: US-VA-Richmond | US-VA-Williamsburg | US-VA-Virginia Beach | US-VA-Tysons Corner | US-DC-Washington

VHB's Virginia offices have an immediate opening for a Transportation Planner! This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope.

Responsibilities
  • Support multimodal transportation planning projects.
  • Conduct and synthesize data-driven analyses (travel demand, safety, access, equity, and performance measures) into clear, compelling planning recommendations.
  • Conduct technical traffic engineering work using Synchro, SIDRA, HCS, MicroStation and VISSIM.
  • Support public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, open houses, small group meetings, and online engagement.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (planning, engineering, urban design, environmental, and GIS) to develop integrated solutions.
  • Mentor junior staff by reviewing work, providing feedback, and modeling collaborative team behavior.
Skills & Abilities
  • Comfort working with data and analysis tools (e.g., GIS, Excel, transportation datasets, safety data) and interpreting results for planning applications.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with strong capability to work independently.
  • A strong work ethic with the desire to learn and achieve.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects and work independently.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with communication tools such as Word, PowerPoint, and graphics software.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of planning, consulting, and compliance experience in the transportation sector.
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field.
  • Professional certification preferred (i.e., American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or PTOE certification).

The base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $150,000 for Virginia and DC offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
