Job Description
Position: Transportation Mechanic
Purpose: Diagnose, adjust, and repair district vehicles, including school buses.
Reports to: Director of Transportation.
Starting Date: Immediate
Pay Rate: Based upon experience.
Terms of Employment: 12 months, as needed.
Position Type: Full Time.
Salary: $21.25 per hour.
Location: Pittsburg, Kansas, USD 250.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid CDL License with required endorsements or willingness to attain them.
- Meet all state requirements for bus drivers, including defensive driving and first aid certification, or willingness to meet them.
Experience:
- Complete required physical exam for bus drivers and 20 hours behind the wheel training.
- Experience in school transportation preferred.
- Knowledge of equipment used in bus maintenance.
- Ability to plan and manage projects.
- ASE Bus Mechanic Certification preferred.

Specific Responsibilities:
- Diagnose potential vehicle malfunctions to determine needed repairs or replacements.
- Inspect buses and transportation equipment to ensure safe operating condition.
- Maintain tools and equipment to ensure availability and safety.
- Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Service bus and transportation equipment and perform scheduled preventative maintenance.
- Substitute for bus drivers when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director and Administration.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Exert 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, and 10-20 pounds constantly.
- Extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
- Adapt to fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment.
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing, frequent stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, crawling, turning, climbing, and balancing.
- Work indoors and outdoors, including noisy and crowded environments year-round.
- Work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
