Role Description
The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of a company's transportation operations. This includes planning, directing, and coordinating transportation activities to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of goods, while optimizing costs and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with a deep understanding of logistics, supply chain management, and transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning & Optimization:
o Develop and implement transportation strategies to meet business objectives and customer demands.
o Analyze transportation data to identify areas for improvement in efficiency, cost reduction, and service quality.
o Optimize routes, modes of transport, and carrier selection to achieve the most cost-effective and timely deliveries.
o Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes in transportation.
Operational Management:
o Manage and supervise a team of drivers and dispatchers.
o Oversee daily transportation operations, including scheduling, dispatching, and tracking of shipments.
o Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations (e.g., DOT, HOS, safety standards).
o Monitor and manage fleet maintenance schedules and vehicle performance.
o Enforce safety protocols and training programs for transportation staff.
P&L Responsibility & Cost Control:
o Exercise fiduciary responsibility for transportation operations with full P&L oversight, ensuring cost control, expenditure monitoring, and implementation of savings initiatives.
o Analyze freight costs, fuel consumption, and other transportation-related expenses.
o Implement strategies to reduce demurrage, detention, and other accessorial charges.
o Utilize transportation management systems (TMS), GPS tracking software, and other logistics technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
o Oversee the implementation and optimization of new transportation software or tools.
Customer Service & Communication:
o Collaborate with sales, customer service, and warehouse teams to ensure timely, accurate delivery.
o Address and resolve transportation-related issues, such as delays, damages, or discrepancies, in a timely and professional manner.
o Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders regarding shipment status and potential challenges.
Reporting & Analysis:
o Generate regular reports on transportation performance metrics (e.g., on-time delivery, cost per mile, fuel efficiency).
o Present findings and recommendations to senior management.
Qualifications:
Experience in transportation management, logistics, or supply chain operations.
o Proven experience managing a team of transportation professionals.
o Experience with both private fleet and common carrier operations preferred.
Skills:
o Strong leadership and team management abilities.
o Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
o Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
o Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS) and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
o In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, HOS, and other relevant transportation laws.
o Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
o Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
Typically involves extended periods of sitting and working at a computer.
May require occasional travel to various sites, depots, or customer locations.
Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Primarily office-based, with occasional visits to warehouse or dispatch areas.
May involve some irregular hours or on-call duties to address operational needs.
