The Michigan State Police is seeking a dedicated Transportation Maintenance Worker to join their Region Maintenance Crew in Grand Rapids. This role includes performing critical maintenance on state trunklines, operating heavy vehicles, and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of regional infrastructure. Candidates must possess a CDL and participate in training to maintain operational standards. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to road safety and maintenance in a state recognized for its employee engagement.
This position performs maintenance of state trunklines within the right-of-way for Region Maintenance Crew in the Grand Region operates various pieces of equipment used in Bridge, Forestry, Sign and Winter maintenance operations. This position is required to participate in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element program and travels with a crew in an assigned geographic area. Operates a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., dump truck, snowplow, etc.) when performing maintenance activities.
Winter months may be spent performing winter maintenance duties at a maintenance garage and the summer months are spent at the Region Maintenance Facility.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit)
Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8
Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of appointment to the position. **If the selected applicant has a CDL Group A or B with or without the N or X endorsement, they will be required to obtain a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position.

The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
