Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Engineering and Construction, District 1 Surveys Section, is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) with a target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) in Rocky Hill. Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management by the end of May 2025 are strongly encouraged to apply!

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

Location: Rocky Hill. Full Time, 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday. First Shift, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required and must be maintained. P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit. Applicants must be available to travel.

THE ROLE

The District 1 Surveys section performs various types of land surveying, including topographic mapping, boundary, and construction surveys. The Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) will learn to:

  1. Operate survey field instruments, such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels, GPS receivers.
  2. Use surveying software to perform complex computations.
  3. Use Microstation/Bentley OpenRoads CADD (computer-aided design and drafting) to prepare, revise, and edit land surveys for mapping.
  4. Develop topographic mapping and DTM’s (Digital Terrain Models) for future Highway and Railroad construction projects and support ongoing construction projects.
  5. Perform related duties as required.

The ideal Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) will:

  1. Possess general knowledge of land surveying and transportation.
  2. Have experience with construction engineering theories, principles, and methods.
  3. Be skilled in computer-aided design software (MicroStation preferred) and other computer applications including Word and Excel.
  4. Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  5. Possess organizational and interpersonal skills.
  6. Possess the ability to read and analyze construction plans and estimates.

SALARY/PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY

Promotional Opportunity

Salary:

  1. Transportation Engineer Trainee: $72,629/annually
  2. After successful completion of a one (1) year training program, you will be promoted to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering): $81,047-$99,673/annually
  3. After successful completion of two (2) years as a Transportation Engineer 1, you will be promoted to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering): $91,244-$117,842/annually
