Job description

Join to apply for the Transportation Engineer (Multigrade) role at Arlington County Government.

Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services is seeking a Transportation Engineer to join the Operations group within the Transportation Engineering and Operations Bureau (TE&O).

Responsibilities
  • Conduct safety evaluations (e.g., all-way stop, signal warrant, pedestrian, crash, and speed) to develop transportation enhancements that improve safety, mobility, and access at intersections and roadway segments.
  • Develop design concepts, review plans, and provide technical expertise for multimodal safety improvement projects, including pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, transit operations, shared mobility devices, and curb space usage.
  • Draft and review multimodal CAD design plans and preliminary design plans to address safety concerns.
  • Coordinate with agencies and programs to review plans and support transportation safety and access matters.
  • Perform synchronization and capacity analyses to develop design concepts for roadway network improvements.
  • Gather transportation data to address safety and access concerns and communicate findings effectively.
  • Represent the Transportation Operations team in stakeholder meetings.
  • Develop and evaluate policies, standards, and guidelines for compliance with industry standards.
Ideal Candidate
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Synchro, and CAD software.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering.
  • At least two years of professional experience in transportation design or operations focusing on multimodal access, safety, and analysis.

Note: Experience cannot substitute for the Engineering Degree requirement. A Master’s in Civil or Transportation Engineering can substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing technical policies and standards.
  • Experience analyzing transportation safety and operations.
  • Experience managing multimodal projects.
  • Proficiency in CAD and GIS applications.
  • Professional Engineer certification.
Additional Requirements

Possession or acquisition of a valid driver’s license is required. A favorable driving record review is also required.

Work Conditions

Standard hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with flexible and telework options. Occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary.

Employees with PE certification are eligible for a $2,600 annual premium.

  • Engineer I: $79,123 - $122,658
  • Engineer II: $83,096 - $128,794
  • Engineer III: $91,645 - $142,043
