Position Overview
Perform transportation engineering work in various functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and maintenance. Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Engage with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices requiring minimal supervision.
Levels and Responsibilities
- Transportation Engineer I: Performs routine transportation engineering tasks following standard practices, with minimal supervision.
- Transportation Engineer II: Handles complex engineering tasks independently, referring only unusual issues to supervisors.
- Transportation Engineer III: Executes advanced and complex engineering work, establishing work plans and priorities, rarely referring issues to supervisors.
Essential Duties
- Oversee contracts, issue work orders, monitor construction schedules, and manage contractor payments and progress.
- Develop, prepare, and manage maintenance contracts.
- Conduct pre-construction meetings and public hearings.
- Interpret maintenance standards, rules, procedures, and policies.
- Perform data collection, analysis, forecasting, and plan development.
- Review change orders, agreements, and estimates.
- Perform additional assigned responsibilities.
Additional Duties for Higher Levels
- Design development, including layouts, plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Assist with design, computer operations, and plan preparation.
- Evaluate and recommend project plans and schedules for efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science.
Experience:
- Engineer I: 4 years of related experience (graduate education may substitute).
- Engineer II: 5 years of related experience.
- Engineer III: 6 years of related experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Out-of-state PE license holders must obtain Texas PE within 6 months.
Competencies
- Pavement maintenance, public relations, basic design, calculations, computer skills, decision-making.
- Additional competencies for higher levels include plan review, maintenance concepts, pavement policies, and budgeting.
Physical and Work Conditions
- Subject to noise, environmental conditions, and required protective gear.
- Lift up to 50 lbs, carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Visual acuity for data, figures, and computer work.
Employment Conditions
- Pre-employment physical and drug testing required.
- Compliance with safety regulations, including drug and alcohol testing.
Position Details

Salary Range
- Engineer I: $65,104 - $106,634
- Engineer II: $69,572 - $114,099
- Engineer III: $76,530 - $129,430
