This is the entry, first working, and journey level of professional engineering work in Caltrans DES Bridge Design. Incumbents perform a wide variety of professional engineering work in either an office or field setting; as incumbents progress in experience, they will be assigned more difficult work.
Under the direction of Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor), the Bridge Engineer works with Project Engineers, staff bridge engineers and detailers in preparing plans and specifications for bridges and walls by performing calculations, running structural analyses using bridge design software, and developing details in accordance with Caltrans Bridge Design Manuals, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, and other reference material.
Acts in the capacity of a Project Engineer on moderate-sized projects. (Requires PE license)

Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.
The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ must be typed and no more than 2 pages, single-spaced, using 12-point Arial font.
