Job description

Under general supervision, perform advanced technical work in Roadway Design using computer drafting and design (\"CADD\") software while applying State, FHWA and AASHTO standards.

Assists in preparing secondary, bridge replacement, safety, and primary plans for design field review, right-of-way, and construction. Utilizes the Rational Method, TR-55 method and USGS regression equations to calculate flood discharges. Calculates pre- and post-development flow rates to develop stormwater management design studies.

Reviews survey data. Assists in plotting original topography, existing profiles, and existing cross-sections. Designs pipe systems using storm sewer design computer programs.

Assists in researching and verifying present right-of-way. Designs sideline and outfall ditches for capacity and stability with ditch protective linings.

Assists in determining superelevation rate, computing superelevation, and lay proposed profiles. Analyzes large culverts and box culverts using culvert analysis computer programs.

Assists in plotting proposed cross-section templates and limits of construction. Performs hydraulic design studies on simple bridge crossings using computer models.

Designs sediment and erosion control devices, including sediment dams, ditch liners, and inlet structure filters. Develops a working knowledge of NPDES and permitting requirements. Assists in incorporating hydraulic design into plans and in determining new right-of-way limits.

Assists in preparing horizontal alignments for various roadway types. Develops knowledge of CAD and master imaging programs.

Attends design field reviews and other meetings as required. Read and interpret any set of road or bridge plans.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
