Job Description

The Bureau of Bridges and Structures (BOBS) serves as the statewide bridge authority for both Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) owned bridges as well as local agency bridges. Every BOBS team member is tasked with efficient and innovative design, construction, and active preservation of Michigan’s structural assets throughout the Great Lakes State. This position provides engineering functions in bridge design, responsible for preparing bridge design plans, proposal material, and cost estimates for bridges and highway facilities using standard design practices and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software (e.g., Open Bridge Modeler, Open Roads Designer, Leap Package, MDX, ProjectWise, AASHTOWare). Work is performed under general guidelines.

The "Salary" listed reflects a range from the minimum at the entry (9) level to the maximum at the experienced (P11) level. Candidates will be reviewed based on education and experience to determine qualification level.

Required Education and Experience

  • Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering; civil engineering preferred.
  • Applicants may be considered if obtaining a degree by May 31, 2025.

Experience

  • Transportation Engineer 9: No specific experience required.
  • Transportation Engineer 10: One year of professional engineering experience involving transportation systems.
  • Transportation Engineer P11: Two years of experience, including one year at the Transportation Engineer 10 level.

Alternate Education and Experience

  • A registered professional engineer license may substitute for 6 months of experience at the relevant levels.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Attach official transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluations if applicable.
