Job description

Join to apply for the Transportation Design Engineer I/II/III role at Texas Department of Transportation.

Perform transportation engineering work in areas such as planning, project development, design, construction, traffic operations, and maintenance. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Contact with governmental officials and private entities is required. Employees at this level follow standard practices with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties:
  • Assist project managers in establishing realistic schedules.
  • Support design, computer operations, and plan preparation.
  • Coordinate and monitor projects, programs, and plans.
  • Coordinate phases of preliminary design and revisions with various agencies and contractors.
  • Develop and review engineering documents, reports, and remediation plans.
  • Conduct on-site reviews and provide technical support.
  • Interpret standards, rules, and policies related to maintenance and traffic operations.
  • Make presentations and represent TxDOT.
  • May serve as a lead worker.
  • Review and process PS&E submissions, specifications, and estimates.
  • Perform data collection, analysis, and plan development.
  • Engage in engineering design work including layouts, sketches, and specifications.
  • Perform pavement and transportation planning studies.
  • Provide design support for district projects.
  • Recommend bridge replacements and repairs.
  • Review designs for traffic management systems and related structures.
  • Certify project design plans and utilize project management tools.
  • Prepare proposals and estimates for project letting.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for Level II & III:
  • Serve as an advisor on technical and regulatory aspects.
  • Assist in budget development and monitoring.
  • Perform complex planning, contract resolution, and standards development.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science.

Experience: Varies by level (Engineer I: 4 years, Engineer II: 5 years, Engineer III: 6 years), with substitutions possible for graduate education.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license, PE license, and compliance with Texas licensing requirements.

Competencies:
  • Knowledge of hydrologic, hydraulic, and transportation engineering principles.
  • Design applications, standards, and specifications.
  • Construction, operation, and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Project scheduling, resource management, and quality assurance.

Additional competencies for higher levels include environmental engineering, project management, and negotiation skills.

Physical & Working Conditions:
  • Environmental conditions, lifting, balancing, and visual acuity requirements.
Employment Conditions:
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing required.
Position Details:

Location: Dallas County Area Office. Responsible for designing and managing highway projects from conception through bidding.

Salary Range: Level-dependent, from $65,104 to $129,430 annually.
