Transportation Planning and Design

Join our dynamic team of transportation planners and designers, dedicated to creating innovative, practical solutions that improve safety, connectivity, and accessibility. Working closely with traffic engineers, you will develop and implement roadway improvements that address immediate traffic challenges while supporting long‑term community goals.

Summary

The Transportation Design Engineer will perform moderate to advanced engineering calculations, alternatives analysis, design, and drafting for a range of transportation projects, including sidewalks, bike paths, local roadways, intersections, highways, freeways, and other transportation facilities. Duties include site visits, CAD mark‑ups, geometric roadway layout and design, 3D corridor modeling, specification writing, technical reporting, construction quantity calculations, cost estimating, client coordination, and project correspondence. Success in this role requires a strong work ethic, a desire to learn new design concepts, excellent organization and communication skills, proficiency in at least one design and drafting software platform, and the ability to work independently and mentor less experienced colleagues.

Job Responsibilities and Duties
  • Perform engineering calculations, alternatives analysis, and design for transportation projects.
  • Develop geometric roadway layouts and 3D corridor models.
  • Create specifications, technical reports, and construction plans.
  • Calculate construction quantities and estimate costs.
  • Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and technical disciplines.
  • Prepare and review deliverables for quality control.
  • Participate in client meetings and resolve project issues.
  • Assist with project delivery, budget, and schedule management.
  • Mentor junior staff and lead small technical efforts.
Software Proficiency
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) – Proficient
  • AutoCAD C3D – Developing
  • Microstation Connect and OpenRoads – Developing (if applicable)
  • Revit, Infraworks – Basic (if applicable)
  • AutoTurn, GuideSign – Task specific
Technical Expertise
  • Intermediate understanding of technical fundamentals.
  • Performs moderately complex design tasks independently.
  • Effectively divides projects into individual tasks.
  • Leads technical effort on small projects.
  • Performs quality control technical checking of basic deliverables.
  • Reviews, interprets, and applies design guidance from technical memos and reports.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Four years of experience required.
  • Three years of experience required with an advanced degree.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • PE required.
  • Valid driver’s license required to support legitimate business purposes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
