Job summary

Fehr & Peers in Portland, OR is seeking a Transportation Design Engineer to lead evaluation, design, and PS&E for diverse transportation projects, collaborating with staff and engaging clients and communities.

You will mentor colleagues, manage projects, and apply MUTCD/AASHTO standards, with focus on complete streets, bikeways, signals, and mobility solutions, while delivering high quality design.

Qualifications

• 4-7 years of transportation engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban planning, or related major.
• PE license (current or plan to obtain).
• Experience applying MUTCD and AASHTO design standards.
• Familiarity with ODOT and local agency standards on Oregon projects.
• Experience with signing, striping, and traffic signal plans.
• Safety countermeasure selection and design.
• Mobility considerations in transportation.
• Experience leading proposals and client relationships.
• Interest in mentoring and training staff.

Job description

As a Transportation Design Engineer, you will lead the evaluation, selection, and design of various transportation system solutions for different communities. You will be involved in generating conceptual designs and construction documents, collaborating with staff at all levels while conducting field work, coordinating closely with members of complete streets engineering and planning teams, engaging in discussions with clients and communities, and on-the-job training.

Your main focus will be to offer innovative and well-thought-out design solutions that align with client objectives and adhere to the latest best practices established by NACTO and similar organizations. Additionally, you will be responsible for project management, overseeing tasks, and assigning technical staff as necessary to deliver projects to clients.

Responsibilities

• Leading and managing tasks for engineering and planning studies
• Performing field work, such as site review preceding design, and support during construction
• Preparing conceptual designs that are accurate, feasible, and visually engaging
• Preparing plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for transportation engineering projects, including complete streets, bikeways, traffic signal, signing/striping, and lighting projects
• Managing direct client interaction and communication with members of the public through community engagement
• Marketing and bringing in new projects by nurturing client relationships, preparing proposals, and presenting in interviews
• Mentoring and training your colleagues and receiving mentorship from senior staff

Qualifications

• 4-7 years of experience in transportation engineering
• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban and regional planning, or a related major (e.g., geography, math, statistics, economics)
• Currently hold or plan to hold a professional engineer’s (PE) license
• Experience applying MUTCD, and AASHTO design standards on a variety of projects
• Familiarity with ODOT and local agency design and operations standards and experience applying them on Oregon projects
• Experience with preparing and reviewing signing, striping, and traffic signal plans
• Safety countermeasure selection and design
• Familiarity with mobility issues and how they affect transportation engineering
• Experience leading proposals and nurturing client relationships
• Interest and experience with mentoring and training staff

• Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification
• Passion for listening to and engaging with diverse communities

$100,000 - $135,000 a year

Placement within the stated pay range will be determined based upon education, experience, and qualifications.
