Job summary

The Arizona Department of Transportation Southeast District in Safford seeks a Tran Construct Tech 4 Materials Coordinator to lead inspection efforts on highway construction projects, hot mix and concrete plants, and to document complex contract items. You will act as a primary contact for contractors and ADOT staff while ensuring compliance with standards and environmental requirements.

  • Four years of experience in highway construction inspection or two years at journey level.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related field may substitute for experience.
  • Must acquire ACI & ATTI certifications within 12 months of hire.
  • Must complete ATSSA technician certification training within 12 months of hire.

  • Inspect highway construction activities and contract items for compliance with standards.
  • Lead technicians, provide coaching and mentoring to inspectors.
  • Prepare field documentation and input to PEN and FAST systems.

Serves as a lead technician. Performs a variety of highly technical activities related to inspection on highway construction projects, hot mix plants and concrete plants. Inspectsand documents the most complex contract items. Assists the project supervisor in the review of construction and documentation. Provides direction, coaching, and mentoringto lower level inspectors. Assists project supervisors in scheduling, mentoring inspection staff. Serves as a primary contact for contractors, consultants, and ADOT employeeson minor construction projects or segments of major construction projects.

Inspect construction actives and contract items to ensure compliance with ADOT standard specifications, standard drawings, project specificspecial provision and plans, as well as applicable Federal laws, rules and policies and Arizona Department of Environmental Qualityrequirements. Use a State Vehicle in the course of these duties.
Prepares field documentation and verifies field calculations for input to the PEN and FAST systems.
Reviews technical problems and develop procedures and recommendations for the resolution of issues related to assignment.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods,procedures, and techniques used in highwayconstruction project inspections, materialstesting and documentations.
  • Environmental best management practices.
  • Project related contract plans,specifications, and documentation.
  • Federal, State and agency standards,policies and procedures.
  • Approved record keeping anddocumentation procedures.
  • Materials equipment used for highwayconstruction and material testing.
  • Google Workspace, Microsoft programsand Adobe Acrobat.

Skill in:

  • Intermediate to advanced mathematics.

Ability to:

  • Safely drive full size pickup truck on andoff roadways.
  • Work outdoors for an extended time withexposed to heat, cold, dust, noise, and nearhigh speed traffic.
  • Manage time to ensure that duties arecompleted in an acceptable and timelymanner.
  • Maintain positive communications underdifficult situations.

Four years experience or two years journey level experience in inspection of highway construction, hot mix and concrete plans orperforming administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance and related duties. A Bachelor's degree inengineering or closely related curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Must acquire ACI & ATTI certifications within 12 months of hire.

Must complete ATSSA technician certification training within 12 months of hire.
