Job summary

Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is seeking a Transportation Construct Technician 4 for the Flagstaff area. The role supports project supervision, inspects materials, and reviews submittals, with mentoring of junior inspectors and scheduling responsibilities.

Responsibilities include field tests on asphalt, concrete, aggregate, earthwork, and traffic control coordination. A state vehicle is used; valid driver’s license required and certifications preferred.

Job Summary:

May serve as the project lead technician, as needed under the general supervision of the Resident Engineer (RE) or Project Supervisor. Monitoring contract compliance in regard to ADOT standard specifications, standard drawings, and project specific plans and special provisions. Assists project supervisor in the review of construction submittals, material certs, and documentation. Provides direction, coaching, & mentoring to lower level inspectors. Assist the Project Supervisor in scheduling, monitoring , and mentoring inspection staff. Receives, reviews, and disseminates all material test results, including but not limited to asphalt, concrete, aggregate, and earthwork. Assists with road block/traffic control, plowing (voluntary), or working dispatch as needed to assist the inclement or winter weather. This position requires driving a State vehicle.

Job Duties:

Inspects minor contract items to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Acts as another lead inspector for personnel assignment to projects providing direction and guidance. Use a State vehicle in the course of job duties.
Prepares filed documentation and verifies field calculations for input into the FAST system. Inspects and approves traffic control and project safety items in compliance with standard specifications and policies.
Performs complex analysis and calculations as required, including laboratory tests, quantities and other contract related documentation. Reviews work performed by other personnel assigned to the area of assignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, procedures, and techniques used in highway construction project inspection, survey, materials testing & documentation.-Work management, analyzing and evaluation of a wide variety of technical engineering dates Federal, State statutes and agency standards, policies, and procedures applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Advanced mathematics.
  • Operate and maintain assigned equipment, in a safe manner.
  • Operating engineering related equipment.
  • Oral and writing communications.
  • Interpersonal relations, as applied to contacts with contractors, representatives and other Governmental agencies and other agency employees.
  • Google suite.

Selective Preference(s):

Experience in operating survey equipment, inspecting minor highway construction projects, hot mix and concrete plants, performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance or related duties; or a Bachelors degree in Engineering Technology or closely related profession may be substituted for the required experience. ATTI & ACI certifications.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Valid Drivers License -This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

ATTI Field Technician Level 1 Certification (Obtained within 12 months of hire date)

ACI Concrete Field Technician Grade 1 Certification (Obtained within 12 months of hire date)

AGC Erosion Control Coordinator Certification (Obtained within 12 months of hire date)

ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification (Obtained within 12 months of hire date)
