Job summary

Clean Harbors is seeking a Transportation Compliance Specialist to ensure that highway, rail, vessel, and air transport comply with applicable regulations. You will provide regulatory guidance across the organization and partner with operations, safety, legal, and leadership to strengthen compliance.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3–5 years of experience in regulatory or environmental compliance, with travel 10–20%.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years in transportation/compliance roles preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide regulatory guidance on transportation compliance to field ops, sales, and training.
  • Interpret and implement transportation policies and procedures with teams.
  • Serve as SME on federal, state, local, and provincial regulations.
  • Support investigations and recommend corrective actions for incidents.
  • Collaborate with agencies on inspections and inquiries.
  • Develop and deliver transportation compliance training programs.

Transportation Compliance Specialist

Clean Harbors is seeking a Transportation Compliance Specialist to join our Transportation Compliance team.

This role is responsible for ensuring that transportation activities involving highway, rail, vessel, and air transportation are conducted in compliance with all applicable federal, state, provincial, and local regulations. The successful candidate will provide technical guidance, regulatory expertise, and compliance support across the organization while partnering with operations, safety, environmental, legal, and leadership teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and guidance on transportation compliance matters to field operations, sales teams, facilities, and training departments.
  • Assist transportation coordinators and operational leadership with the interpretation and implementation of transportation policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert regarding federal, state, provincial, and company transportation regulations.
  • Support transportation-related incident and accident investigations and recommend corrective actions when applicable.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies regarding inspections, incidents, investigations, and compliance inquiries.
  • Assist with the development, delivery, and administration of transportation compliance training programs.
  • Partner with Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance teams to support audits, inspections, and compliance initiatives.
  • Manage transportation compliance incidents, including support for internal compliance reporting and help line coverage.
  • Work closely with Risk Management, Legal, Environmental Compliance, and Operations teams to address transportation incidents and regulatory matters.
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance transportation compliance and reduce operational risk.
  • Review, develop, and administer corrective action and disciplinary recommendations related to transportation compliance issues.
  • Participate in management investigations involving transportation compliance incidents.
  • Maintain awareness of changing transportation regulations and industry requirements across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Support legal proceedings and provide transportation compliance expertise when required.
  • Provide guidance during emergency response situations related to transportation compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • 3-5 years of transportation compliance, regulatory compliance, environmental compliance, or related experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Valid passport or ability to obtain one.
  • Strong working knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in hazardous waste, hazardous materials transportation, or environmental services industries.
  • Knowledge of U.S. and Canadian federal, state, and provincial transportation regulations.
  • Familiarity with Clean Harbors operations and services.
  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, investigations, and regulatory reporting.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and training facilitation skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and regulatory agencies.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and transportation compliance requirements.
Travel
  • Travel required: 10-20%
