Job Description

Transportation - Bus Aide

Purpose Statement

The job of Transportation - Bus Aide is to provide support within the student transportation services area, with specific responsibilities for assisting all passengers, including special education students, during transport to and from school and/or special activities, and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.

This job reports to an assigned supervisor.

Essential Functions

• Assists special education students and other passengers for safe loading, unloading, acceptable behavior, emergency provision, during normal transport and emergency transport situations.
• Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for gathering information required to perform assigned job functions.
• Collaborates with bus driver for ensuring a secure and supportive environment on bus.
• Communicates with passengers to enforce rules/regulations and maintain student safety and well‑being.
• Ensures parent participation as needed for students who require a parent at pick-up and drop-off locations.
• Fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for safe transport.
• Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc.
• Prepares reports (incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) to document activities and convey information.
• Reports student behavior and/or incidents to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Secures students and their equipment (restrains, wheelchair tie-downs, seat belts, etc.) for safety and well‑being.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of daily student bus transportation.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS: adhere to safety practices; prepare and maintain accurate records; operate equipment used in transporting special needs students; administer first aid and/or prescribed medications; inspect vehicles; communicate effectively with students, parents, staff.

KNOWLEDGE: basic math; read manuals; write documents; solve practical problems; knowledge of safety practices and procedures; age-appropriate activities; codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies; emergency first aid.

ABILITY: schedule activities; gather and collate data; work with equipment; flexibility; work with diverse individuals; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team; lift, push, pull, work overtime; meet deadlines and schedules; problem-solving for emergencies and behavior situations.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices; leading, guiding, and coordinating others; operating within a defined budget.

Work Environment

Physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine finger dexterity. The job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing, with minimal temperature variations and exposure to risk of injury or illness.

Experience: Job related experience desired.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
