Job summary

Major Duties
  • Initiating and managing the physical movement of goods.
  • Investigating and resolving problems fix computer rejects and correct shipment records within systems.
  • Includes conducting prepayment audits on carrier invoices and inspecting carrier terminals to recover lost freight.
  • Verifying the Notice of Availability (NOA) for freight forwarders and processing to secure transportation funding for major end items.
  • Responds to inquiries to provide shipment status updates, resolve in-transit issues, and serves as a point of contact
  • Handles emergency requisitions, expedites a wide range of specialized cargo and coordinates urgent shipments that cannot be moved through normal channels.
  • Duties at the GS-6 grade level will be performed in a developmental capacity
Qualification Summary

To qualify for a Transportation Assistant, your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Verifying documents, correcting shipment records, and conducting financial audits to prevent errors and recover costs. Investigate complex issues, research computer system rejects, audit carrier invoices, and resolve in-transit problems. Operating multiple computer systems and databases simultaneously to manage, track, and correct logistics data. Communicate with customers, carriers, freight forwarders, and internal warehouse staff, both verbally and in writing Responding to emergency demands and urgent shipments and managing priorities. B. Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands

Work is generally of a sedentary nature. Work requires handling of material that may weigh up to 25 pounds. If moving or lifting items over 25 pounds, will request assistance or utilizing lifting devices. May be required to climb ladders and work on safety pallets. During periods of work in the warehouse, work may require some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Work Environment

Work is usually performed in an office setting, however, visits to warehouses, secure areas, or outdoor locations may be necessary to locate and count material. Work may be performed in hazardous areas where chemicals, poisons, and/or low levels of radioactive material is stored; also, may be required to work in refrigerated areas with 42-45-degree temperatures and small freezers where the normal temperature is below 0. Employees are required to wear appropriate safety clothing and equipment as determined by safety requirements and the supervisor.
