Berkshire County Head Start is seeking a Transportation and Safety Manager to coordinate daily routes, health and safety operations, and staff supervision across program sites.

You will partner with the Director of Health and Safety, families, and departments to develop safety plans, maintain records, and ensure timely drills and inspections. Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of related health/safety/transportation operations experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience coordinating staff and workflows.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain quickly.
  • Strong organization, record keeping, data-audit, and follow-through skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic record keeping systems, email, spreadsheets, and standard office applications.
  • Able to complete background checks and health requirements; valid driver's license if driving.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily routes, schedules, seating charts, passenger logs, attendance, field trips, service changes, and cancellations.
  • Serve as primary contact for contracted transportation provider and address safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain child safety seats, emergency transport kits, and safety procedures; manage inventories.
  • Develop individualized transportation safety plans with the Director of Health and Safety, families, and departments.
  • Schedule and document emergency bus evacuation drills; maintain logs and safety checks.
  • Supervise Bus Monitor and staff; manage scheduling, onboarding, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Audit health data and maintain health/transportation records, care plans, and consent forms in GoEngage.
  • Prepare family follow-up communications; track equipment service dates; order health supplies; support wellness initiatives.

Job description

Description

The Transportation and Safety Manager coordinates transportation and related health and safety operations across program sites. This role oversees schedules, records, vendors, supplies, emergency preparedness, and individualized safety planning; supervises assigned transportation staff; and supports compliance with Head Start and agency requirements.


Key Responsibilities


  • Coordinate daily routes, schedules, seating charts, passenger logs, attendance records, field trips, service changes, and cancellations.

  • Serve as the primary contact for the contracted transportation provider and address service or safety concerns promptly.

  • Maintain child safety seats, emergency transportation backpacks, required rescue-medication procedures, and transportation supply inventories.

  • Develop individualized transportation safety plans with the Director of Health and Safety, families, and relevant departments.

  • Schedule and document emergency bus evacuation drills at least three times per year and ensure required logs and safety checks are completed.

  • Supervise the Bus Monitor and other assigned staff, including scheduling, onboarding, coaching, training, and performance feedback.

  • Audit health data and follow-up needs; maintain accurate health and transportation records, health care plans, and consent forms in GoEngage.

  • Prepare family follow-up communications, track screening equipment service dates, order health supplies, and support wellness initiatives and department training.


Requirements

Qualifications


  • Associate degree in health services, early childhood education, human services, business administration, transportation operations, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.

  • At least two years of related experience in health, safety, transportation, early childhood, or human-services operations.

  • Prior supervisory experience and the ability to coordinate staff, schedules, and workflows.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification—or the ability to obtain certification within the required time frame.

  • Strong organization, record keeping, data-audit, communication, and follow-through skills.

  • Proficiency with electronic record keeping systems, email, spreadsheets, and standard office applications.

  • Ability to complete required background checks, health requirements, and job‑related training; valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record if driving is assigned.


Preferred


  • Experience in Head Start or another early childhood program.

  • Training or certification in child passenger safety, medication administration, blood pressure measurement, or school transportation safety.
