Job summary

Duke Health in Durham, NC seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to serve as a Hospitalist in Abdominal Transplant Surgery. You will provide direct patient care for acutely ill adults, perform exams, document progress, order tests and medications, and collaborate with physicians and the care team.

The role emphasizes patient-centered care, teaching, and leadership within the unit. Rotating 12-hour shifts with day/night coverage and weekend/holiday rotations support a dynamic schedule.

Qualifications

• PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program. Master's or Doctoral degree strongly preferred.
• NP: Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Acute Care / Critical Care Nurse Practitioner program for adults.
• PA: PA-C
• NP: ACNP or AGACNP is REQUIRED.
• PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA
• NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.
• Both: Federal and State DEA with unrestricted Prescriptive Authority
• PA: 1 or more years as a Physician Assistant in an inpatient hospitalist or surgical setting is strongly desired.
• NP: Three years minimum as a registered nurse, with minimum of one year experience as an Acute Care NP, preferably in an inpatient hospitalist or surgical setting.
• OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Responsibilities

• Utilize assessment, diagnostic and clinical skills to provide care to patients during admission.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the supervising physician’s scope.
• Document patient course of treatment under the physician’s direction: History/Physical/Admissions; Problem List and Plan of Care; Daily Progress Note; Procedure Note; Interval Notes; Discharge Summary.
• Facilitate daily rounds in the unit.
• Collaborate with consulting services, physicians and nursing staff to ensure longitudinal continuity of care.
• Participate in meeting the educational requirements of students, residents and fellows.
• Collaborate with the nurse manager to assure safe, cost-effective patient care; ensure proper charges and documentation.
• Participate in unit quality improvement initiatives.
