Note: the hiring manager may elect to fill this position(s) at either the Tech I level or Tech II level dependent upon a candidate's skills and experience.
Position Summary:
This is the second craft level of the Relay Technician hierarchy. A Transmission Relay Tech I will assist a higher-level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.
Responsibilities
Substation safety behavior with complete knowledge of safe work practices and can actively eliminate safety issues and will point out safety concerns to others
Ability to work with others, resistant to internal and external pressures, and resilient to conflict
Can organize construction work, and create overall implementation plans
Clear understanding on how to read prints and determine how to isolate risk without jeopardizing critical protective schemes.
Can methodically/logically organize, write and review isolation procedures. Then execute these procedures error free.
Utilizing old and new drawings and existing conditions, has demonstrated ability to find and correct design errors that affect scheme operation
Ability to serve as lead in call out role.
Can isolate and test any relay with RTS routine
Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help
Can lead small and low risk projects and has installation experience with differential, breaker failure, line and distance relaying.
Firm grasp of carriers, and tone equipment, traps and tuners
Can handle paperwork and files in timely fashion with no discrepancies
Can assist with the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers or other temporary equipment.
Ability to query ASPEN
Ability test and trouble shoot P&C circuits, CT's and VT's, CCVT', CVT's.
Can independently operate; phase angle meters, relay test sets, fiber optics test sets, carrier test sets, ground detectors, CT testers.
Adheres to Duke Policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (NERC and/or SERC), properly and accurately documents test results with a timely completion
Has firm understanding of SCADA systems, modems, SEL2032's, UniOP, SEL2411's and other station annunciator and alarm packages.
Has ability to independently commission circuits with DCC
Has ability to terminate and test fiber optic cables
Fully understands the Blocking Guidelines
Basic/Required Qualifications - Relay Tech I
Associate's degree in engineering technology and one plus years work related experience OR
HS/GED and three plus years work related experience in lieu of an associate's degree.
Basic/Required Qualifications - Relay Tech II
Associate's degree in engineering technology and three plus years work related experience OR
HS/GED and five plus years work related experience in lieu of an associate's degree.

Master's job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance. Provides lower level of leadership.

Working Conditions
Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call out rotation
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet
This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
This position is based out on North and South Carolina
Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
Specific Requirements
Must have a valid State Driver's License
Ability to pass any required back ground check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance
Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements noted in Learner Relay Tech
