Job summary

1898 & Co. is a power systems consulting firm seeking an Electrical Power Systems Engineer to perform transmission planning studies and related analyses in the US.

You will use industry software to evaluate operating conditions, reliability, and economic dispatch, supporting client projects with robust technical and financial analyses. Responsibilities include data interpretation, risk assessments under regulatory frameworks, and preparing technical reports and client presentations.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program plus three years of experience in power system planning and operations.
  • Alternatively, a master’s degree plus two years of experience in power system planning and operations is acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission planning studies using industry software (PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, Promod).
  • Develop and conduct financial analyses and technical reports for client projects.
  • Assist project managers in business development activities including proposals and client relationships.
  • Develop client presentations and engineering reviews for utility design/planning.
  • Travel up to 15% domestically; telecommuting up to 30 days per year.

Description


  • Perform a broad range of studies and other consulting services such as transmission planning and operational studies consisting of power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage analysis, harmonics analysis, electromagnetic, reliability, and economic dispatch associated with congestion management scenarios.

  • Evaluate regulatory conditions and risks by applying NERC, FERC, and Regional requirements, policies and procedures, production costing, risk assessment techniques, TPL compliance, and generator interconnection principles.

  • Independently execute transmission system planning studies using industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.

  • Perform independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.

  • Conduct data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and results, and subsequent technical business implications to client projects.

  • Analyze life-cycle costs by developing and incorporating technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.

  • Conducts technical and business-related risk assessments that evaluate impacts associated with rules implemented by regulatory agencies.

  • Develop and conduct detailed financial analysis using a variety of computer-based software.

  • Develop technical reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis.

  • Develop client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems.

  • Assist project managers in business development activities including proposal development and client relationships.

  • Support business lines as required by clients.

  • Up to 15% domestic travel is required to client locations for meetings and presentations.

  • Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year.

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a directly related field from an ABET accredited program plus three (3) years of experience in power system planning and operations. Alternatively, the employer will also accept a master's degree in engineering, or a directly related field plus two (2) years of experience in power system planning and operations in lieu of bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of described experience.


Must have two (2) years of experience in the following:



  • Power system analysis, protection and control, electrical design, or system planning processes.

  • Evaluating system performance, developing solutions, or upgrading electrical facilities.

  • Standard engineering, construction, operation techniques, principles, or procedures associated with electrical facilities.

  • Either consulting or electric utilities experience.

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).


Up to 15% domestic travel is required to client locations for meetings and presentations.


Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year.
