Job summary

Xcel Energy Inc is seeking an intern for the Transmission Line Engineering & Design Group. You will analyze high-voltage transmission lines and learn NESC clearance checks, with exposure to modeling and design using PLS-CADD.

The role starts May 24, 2027, offering a hybrid work arrangement and potential extension based on performance and business needs. Eligible candidates are ABET-credited engineering students ready for full-time summer work.

Qualifications

  • This internship targets students in ABET accredited programs pursuing Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical engineering.
  • Candidates must be current students with the ability to work full-time in the summer or part-time during the school year.
  • Hybrid work policy requires commuting to the designated work location in person.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and design high-voltage transmission lines (69kV–345kV).
  • Work with PLS-CADD for line modeling and design tasks.
  • Learn NESC code and clearance checks for lines and encroachment reviews.
  • Review standards and discuss material and construction practices for HV lines.
  • Support facility rating methodology and related analyses.

This intern will be working on the Transmission Line Engineering & Design Group team. The job role includes: Analyze and design new and existing high voltage transmission lines operating at varying voltage levels from 69kV - 345kV and become familiar with NESC code. Perform clearance checks and encroachment application reviews as well as review standards and become familiar with material and construction practices for high voltage lines.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Work with PLS-CADD
  • Learn estimating procedures
  • Learn NESC code and how to check for clearance violations
  • Model, Design, and analyze new and existing transmission lines
  • Learn facility rating methodology
  • Become familiar with material and construction practices for high voltage lines

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical engineering
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
