Job summary

HDR in Seattle, WA seeks a Transmission Line Engineer to design high‑voltage transmission lines using PLS‑CADD and related tools. You will coordinate release packages, support junior staff, and participate in client design reviews.

The role requires a B.E. or equivalent, a PE license, and 4+ years in power or renewables. Proficiency with MS Office and transmission voltages 69kV–500kV is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required or must be active/transferable per location.
  • Experience with high-voltage transmission line projects and relevant design codes is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare conceptual and detailed transmission line designs using PLS-CADD and foundation software.
  • Coordinate construction release packages: plans/profiles, load trees, assemblies, bills of materials.
  • Lead and mentor junior team members; perform QC reviews of other teams' work.
  • Identify learning opportunities for EITs/Designers through on-the-job tasks and knowledge sharing.
  • Perform quality control reviews on multiple projects to ensure design integrity.
  • Provide engineering input on project design issues and options.
  • Develop design options through engineering analyses.
  • Assist with cost estimates or specifications for projects.
  • Attend client stakeholder meetings and lead design reviews with clients.
  • Develop project manhour estimates and schedules.
  • Manage multiple tasks across projects within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Conduct site visits during design, construction, and as-built phases.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of Transmission Line Engineer, we'll count on you to:
  • Preparing all technical aspects and deliverables associated with the conceptual and detailed transmission lines design of increasing complexity using PLS-CADD and foundation design software such as L-Pile, MFAD or Caisson.
  • Coordinating the preparation of construction release packages for high voltage transmission lines including plan and profiles, structure load trees, structure assemblies and details, stringing charts, foundation schedules and details, and bills of material.
  • Assigning tasks and providing guidance to junior team members and coordinating quality control reviews for work performed by EITs and/or Designers.
  • Identifying and implementing learning opportunities for EITs and/or Designers through such methods as job shadowing, assigning specific project tasks, “show and tell”, lunch and learns and general knowledge sharing.
  • Performing quality control reviews of projects from other teams as needed.
  • Providing engineering input on specific project design issues and questions.
  • Conducting engineering analyses to develop design options.
  • Assisting with preparation of cost estimates or specifications.
  • Attending client stakeholder meetings and leading design reviews with the client.
  • Providing input to the development of project manhours estimates and task schedules.
  • Effectively managing multiple tasks for multiple projects while being cognizant of schedule and budget.
  • Performing site visits during the design, construction, and as-built phases of projects, including participating in field reviews or construction observation.
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, or related field.
  • Experience interpreting and applying requisite industry design codes such as NESC, IEEE, ASCE and ACI.
  • 4+ years of transmission line engineering experience in the electric utility and/or renewables industry.
  • Experience using PLS-CADD, performing analysis of transmission structures, and preparing specifications and drawings and other engineering documents for transmission line projects.
  • Experience liaising and communicating closely with internal and external project stakeholders, including environmental, real estate, construction, maintenance, substation, telecommunications, and project management.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with transmission line voltages of 69kV thru 500kV desired, experience thru 765kV an added benefit.
  • Exposure to developing project manhour and cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Prior experience in foundations design using software such as L-Pile, Caisson or MFAD.
  • Experience working with Renewables developers and/or the interconnection of Renewables a plus.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
