The Transmission Line Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and technical support of high-voltage overhead and underground transmission line systems (typically 69kV–345kV+). This role supports the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of bulk electric power through new capital projects, system upgrades, reliability initiatives, and infrastructure modernization efforts.
Responsibilities
- Design overhead and underground transmission line systems, including route selection, structure spotting, and clearance verification.
- Perform sag and tension calculations and evaluate conductor selection, thermal ratings, and ampacity.
- Support lightning performance, insulation coordination, grounding, and shielding evaluations.
- Develop engineering drawing packages, including plan and profile drawings, technical details, and bills of materials.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, environmental, and substation engineering teams.
- Apply internal engineering standards, specifications, and construction requirements while ensuring designs align with applicable IEEE standards.
- Support reliability and regulatory compliance requirements, including NERC standards, environmental permitting, and right-of-way requirements.
- Provide engineering support throughout construction and commissioning activities.
- Review contractor submittals and vendor drawings, respond to field requests for information (RFIs), and support outage planning and system energization.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering.
- Experience in transmission line design, utility engineering, or EPC transmission projects.
- Knowledge of overhead transmission line construction practices.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and perform engineering calculations.
Preferred:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
- Experience with transmission line modeling software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or similar tools.
- Experience working with utility engineering standards and construction specifications.
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
