Job description
Overview

Transmission & Interconnection Engineer - Battery Storage. Remote

Plus Power is an energy storage market leader with a 10+ GW portfolio across more than 25 states. Standalone energy storage is transforming North American electric grids, enabling high-penetration renewable energy and balancing intra-hour supply and demand. We seek a data-driven, collaborative professional to help develop, build, and operate assets safely and reliably to decarbonize power markets.

The T&I Engineer will perform interconnection modeling analyses and studies, participate in interconnection scoping meetings and negotiations with third parties and grid authorities, and identify tools to manage costs. The role requires a thorough understanding of requirements to integrate a battery energy storage system (BESS) utility-scale plant into the power grid and its implications on day-to-day grid operations and resource planning.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct steady-state power transmission system analysis on TARA or related software to predict network upgrades and mitigation options in various US markets.
  • Prepare, submit, and manage generator interconnection processes across ISOs/RTOs.
  • Conduct IBR modeling and performance tuning studies using PSCAD and PSSE.
  • Develop and validate PSLF, PSS/E, and PSCAD models for BESS generation plants and interconnections, including load flow, dynamic simulations, and reporting.
  • Ensure storage resource projects interconnecting to the transmission system meet grid requirements.
  • Develop local system EMT models, perform disturbance ride-through simulations, and benchmark PSCAD/PSSE models for system stability and compliance with grid standards.
  • Maintain understanding of generation interconnection processes across ISOs/RTOs.
  • Provide assistance to other teams on interconnection processes and reactive deficiency analysis.
  • Participate in interconnection scoping meetings and negotiations with third parties and grid authorities.
  • Perform technical due diligence to determine integration capabilities of electrical grids.
  • Provide technical advice on transmission and distribution interconnection issues for various markets.
  • Determine cost-effective options for expanding integration capabilities of proposed projects.
  • Research utilities and power pools to analyze how their actions affect interconnection processes.
  • Assess transmission reliability issues and develop action plans to mitigate interconnection shortfalls.
  • Coordinate plans with ISOs to respond to Bulk Power System requirements.
Qualifications
  • Minimum BA/BS in electrical engineering; a master's degree and specialization in Power and Energy Systems preferred.
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in power and energy industry with focus on electrical systems; renewable energy experience preferred.
  • Strong background in power systems, analytical and modeling skills; experience with complex electrical system simulations preferred.
  • Proficiency in power system modeling software: PSCAD, PSLF, PSSE.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more organized markets outside ERCOT (e.g., CAISO, SPP, MISO, PJM).
  • Experience with inverter-based plant modeling.
  • Ability to perform power flow analyses and review models and studies.
  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams and strong presentation and writing skills; capable of communicating across regions and languages.
  • Ability to engage with customers and stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
