Job summary

HDR Engineering is seeking an entry-level Transmission EIT / Transmission Designer to join our Power Delivery team in Billings, MT. The role supports the design of high‑voltage transmission projects, from simple structure replacements to greenfield designs, with hands-on learning and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities include structural analysis, drawings, BOMs, vendor reviews, and collaboration with electrical, civil, and protection engineers, with occasional site visits and field support.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Engineering required.
• Active pursuit or completion of EIT preferred (entry-level pathway).

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design of steel structures, foundations, and support systems per codes.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.
• Review vendor shop drawings for conformance to construction documents.
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, and protection & control engineers for integrated design solutions.
• Conduct site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, and field engineering support.
• Support project management activities including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and client communication.
• Work under the direction of Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
• Develop design options, perform modeling/calculations, and prepare design sketches and concept drawings.
• Develop construction drawings with Designers and CAD Technicians per standards and specs.
• Assist with cost estimates or specifications.
• Participate in field reviews or construction observation.
• Design typical elements such as structure design, conjugate spotting, sag/blowout calculations, foundation design, hardware selection and BOM development.

Transmission EIT / Transmission Designer

HDR Engineering is seeking a Transmission EIT / Transmission Designer to join our Power Delivery team. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a team that executes technical design on high‑voltage transmission line engineering projects ranging in scale from simple structure replacements to large greenfield design projects. This is an excellent entry‑level opportunity for a self‑directed individual who is eager to learn and take on new challenges.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design of steel structures, foundations, and support systems in compliance with applicable codes (ASCE, ACI, AISC, IEEE, NESC).
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.
• Review vendor shop drawings for conformance to construction documents.
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, and protection & control engineers to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Conduct site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, and field engineering support.
• Support project management activities including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and client communication.
• Work under the direction of Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
• Conduct analyses to develop design options, perform modeling and/or calculations, and prepare design sketches and concept drawings.
• Work with Designers and CAD Technicians to develop construction drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes, and project specifications and requirements.
• Assist with preparing cost estimates or specifications.
• Participate in field reviews or construction observation.
• Design typical elements such as structure design, structure spotting, conductor sag and blowout calculations, foundation design, hardware selection and fit‑up, and development of bill of materials, while considering environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, public involvement, access roads, and construction requirements.
• Occasional short‑term travel (typically 1‑5 days) may be necessary; longer term assignments may be required infrequently on project assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates without their EIT will be hired into a Transmission Designer position and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
