HDR Engineering in Billings, MT is seeking a Transmission EIT/Transmission Designer to join our growing Power Delivery team. You will perform structural analysis and design of steel structures, prepare drawings and specifications, and review vendor shop drawings for conformance.

This entry‑level role offers exposure to high‑voltage line projects, field data collection, and coordination with electrical, civil, and protection teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• EIT certificate preferred; if not, candidate will be hired as Transmission Designer and must obtain EIT for progression.
• Willingness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design of steel structures, foundations, and support systems.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.

Transmission EIT/Transmission Designer

HDR Engineering is currently seeking a Transmission EIT/Transmission Designer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a team that executes technical design on high‑voltage transmission line engineering projects ranging from simple structure replacements to large greenfield design projects. This is an excellent entry‑level opportunity for a self‑directed individual who is eager to learn and take on new challenges.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design of steel structures, foundations, and support systems in compliance with applicable codes (ASCE, ACI, AISC, IEEE, NESC).
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.
• Review vendor shop drawings for conformance to construction documents.
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, and protection & control engineers to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Conduct site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, and field engineering support.
• Support project management activities including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and client communication.
• Work under the direction of Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
• Conduct analyses to develop design options, perform modeling and/or calculations, and prepare design sketches and concept drawings.
• Work with Designers and CAD Technicians to develop construction drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes, and project specifications.
• Assist with preparing cost estimates or specifications.
• Participate in field reviews or construction observation.
• Typical designs include structure design, structure spotting, conductor sag and blowout calculations, foundation design, hardware selection and fit‑up, and development of bill of materials, while considering environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, public involvement, access roads, and construction requirements.
• Occasional short‑term travel (typically 1‑5 days) and, infrequently, longer term assignments may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
• Candidates without their EIT will be hired into a Transmission Designer position and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office.
