Responsibilities

• Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, and quality assessment using FFPE and frozen tissues.
• Develop, optimize, and execute histology, IHC, IF, multiplex IF, and ISH assays, including RNAscope®.
• Operate and troubleshoot automated staining platforms and histology equipment.
• Acquire high-quality images using brightfield, fluorescence, whole-slide, and confocal microscopy.
• Perform quantitative image analysis using HALO, QuPath, ImageJ, or similar software.
• Develop tissue-based assays, evaluating antibodies, RNA probes, biomarkers, and imaging workflows.
• Apply molecular and cellular assays to support biomarker and mechanistic studies.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external CROs.
• Maintain accurate lab documentation, protocols, SOPs, and study records.
• Analyze, interpret, and present experimental findings to project teams.

We are seeking a Translational Biology Scientist to support preclinical drug discovery through the development and execution of histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), in situ hybridization (ISH), and digital pathology assays.

This role will perform tissue processing, assay development and optimization, image acquisition, and quantitative analysis to support biomarker discovery, target engagement, and translational research. The ideal candidate will also have experience with molecular, cellular, and/or biochemical assay development and execution.

What You'll Do

• Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, and section quality assessment using FFPE and frozen tissues.
• Develop, optimize, and execute histology, IHC, IF, multiplex IF, and ISH assays, including RNAscope®.
• Operate and troubleshoot automated staining platforms and histology laboratory equipment.
• Acquire high-quality images using brightfield, fluorescence, whole-slide, and confocal microscopy.
• Perform quantitative image analysis using digital pathology software such as HALO, QuPath, ImageJ, or similar platforms.
• Develop and implement tissue-based assays, including evaluation of antibodies, RNA probes, biomarkers, and imaging workflows.
• Apply complementary molecular and cellular assay techniques, as appropriate, to support biomarker, target engagement, and mechanistic studies.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external CROs to support preclinical and translational studies.
• Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, protocols, SOPs, and study records.
• Analyze, interpret, and present experimental findings to project teams.

What You Bring

Associate Scientist Level

• B.S./B.A. in Biology, Histology, Neuroscience, or a related scientific discipline with 2+ years of relevant experience; or M.S. with 0–2 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Scientist Level

• B.S./B.A. in a related scientific discipline with 4+ years of relevant experience; or M.S. with 2+ years of relevant experience; or Ph.D. with 0–2 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position level will be determined based on education, relevant experience, and demonstrated scientific and technical capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with FFPE and/or frozen tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and cryosectioning.
• Experience with molecular and/or cellular assay techniques.
• Experience with IHC, IF, and in situ hybridization (ISH/RNAscope®).
• Experience developing, optimizing, or troubleshooting tissue-based assays.
• Familiarity with automated staining platforms.
• Experience with digital pathology and image analysis software such as HALO, Imaris, CellSense, ImageJ, or similar.
• Experience with brightfield, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy.
• Experience with neuroscience/CNS tissues, biomarkers, or preclinical drug discovery is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
• Ability to work onsite in San Diego, CA.
