Job summary

The Town of Blacksburg, VA is seeking a semiskilled Transit Vehicle Maintenance Technician to perform servicing, lubrication and repairs on buses, while maintaining accurate records. Work under the Lead Mechanic, with set shifts and essential-position status during incidents.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of automotive maintenance experience, plus a Class B CDL with Air Brakes and P endorsement. A pre-employment drug screen is required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Check buses and ensure safe operating condition.
• Perform repairs or hold buses as needed.
• Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on gas and diesel vehicles.
• Repair parts as instructed; rebuild bus components.
• Perform road tests on vehicles.
• Replace tires/brakes and maintain alignment; rotate/balance tires.
• Change oil and fluids; check lights.
• Diagnose and repair wheelchair lifts.
• Replace parts; rebuild bus components as needed.
• Train new staff on safety and operations.
• Pick up parts; keep shop clean.

Job description

Performs semiskilled work servicing, lubricating, and assisting with the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles, preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

The set starting range for this position is $36,689.00 to $38,171.00 annually.

• Checks buses and ensures buses are in safe operating condition
• Performs repairs or holds buses as needed

• Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, vans, buses and maintenance equipment
• Thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions
• Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work
• Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts
• Ability to operate a personal computer and lap top with the applicable software programs to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports
• Ability to lift heavy objects
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors and the general public

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required
• Three to five years experience in the maintenance and servicing of automotive and power-driven equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

• Valid commercial driver's license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record
• This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
• A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
• Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration, will be followed during the employment period

• This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
• Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting
