The Town of Blacksburg is seeking a transit vehicle maintenance worker to service and repair buses, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure safety on the fleet. This essential role reports to the Lead Mechanic and requires CDL Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement.
Shifts are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. A High school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of automotive maintenance experience are required.
Performs semiskilled work servicing, lubricating, and assisting with the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles, preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm
The set starting range for this position is $36,689.00 to $38,171.00 annually.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, vans, buses and maintenance equipment
Thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions
Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work
Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts
Ability to operate a personal computer and lap top with the applicable software programs to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports
Ability to lift heavy objects
Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors and the general public
High school diploma or GED required
Three to five years experience in the maintenance and servicing of automotive and power-driven equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid commercial driver's license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
