Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is seeking a Principal Inspector to oversee transit and rail construction inspection projects in the New York area. You will supervise field staff, coordinate with clients, draft reports, and ensure compliance with plans, specs, and safety requirements.

The role requires 8+ years in construction inspection, strong leadership, and familiarity with environmental permitting and DBE/EEO reporting.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in transit/rail construction inspection.
  • Experience supervising field staff and coordinating project activities.
  • Knowledge of construction techniques, reading plans, specs, and safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise project inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance with plans, contract documents, specs and standards.

Position summary

Performs as a principal inspector responsible for the supervision of projects in transit and rail construction inspection engineering work.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Compensation for this position is $100,000.00 - $118,500.00, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. If so, the actual salary range may vary from the estimate provided.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and supervise project inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance of plans, contract documents, specifications and standards.
  • Assign, schedule and maintain subordinate inspection staff throughout all phases of the project.
  • Work on behalf of the Client to draft project correspondence, facilitate project meetings, and resolve construction related field issues.
  • Review and maintain all pertinent project documentation and ensure that it accurately details construction progress, activities and materials, meets environmental permitting conditions, comply with safety policies and programs, and monitors EEO and DBE progress and performance
  • Prepare, review and submit project daily reports, inspection reports, work authorizations, work orders and estimates.
  • Document and notify contractor of non-compliance and corrective action.
  • Review, analyze and evaluate contractor schedules.
  • Track project progress and advises parties of possible overruns, and critical project issues.
  • Completes analysis of field tests
  • Attend pre-bid, pre-construction and/or management level meetings throughout the course of the project, assist the client with change orders, claim defense, and provide updates to the client construction progress and issues.
  • Interact with the general public, government agencies, contractors, sub-contractors, and other internal and external parties to respond to inquiries.

Required Skills
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Strong Computer Proficiency
Required Experience
  • Demonstrated experience working on transit and railroad projects.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 8+ years of construction inspection experience
  • Client requested certifications
  • Knowledge and experience in construction techniques, reading plans, procedures, methods, equipment and materials
  • Supervisory experience in construction management/inspection situations
  • Ability to act in an Owner’s Agent/Responsible in Charge role
  • Active driver’s license
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with local clients
  • Current Railway Workers Protection Training
  • Specific strength in structural and foundation inspections
  • Associates or bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering
Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
