Overview

VHB’s Transit & Rail Summer Internship in Boston, MA is designed to introduce students into the workforce. The program builds essential professional skills by offering opportunities for hands‑on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The internship rounds out participants’ academic learning with real world experience and helps them explore related areas of practice to find the best fit for their career path.

Term

The internship term runs from July 2026 to August 2026.

About Our Practice

VHB has a dedicated Transit & Rail Practice providing integrated services for commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, intercity/high‑speed rail, freight rail, bus rapid transit, bus, and streetcar systems in urban, suburban, and rural environments. Our team assists transportation agencies through all phases of a project with environmental documentation, station, facility, and right‑of‑way design; transit/rail structures; rail systems; planning; cost estimation; grant submittals; demand estimation; and operations analysis and simulation.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the development of planning and engineering solutions.
  • Assist in data mining and visualization.
  • Perform analysis of data or calculations.
  • Perform field data collection and other on‑site project support activities.
  • Prepare written documents, summarize information collected by others, and assemble reports.
Skills and Attributes
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently.
  • Self‑motivated with attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic with a desire to learn and achieve.
  • Knowledge of drawing and mapping tools such as AutoCAD and GIS.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is required.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in engineering, planning or a related field.
  • Strong interest in transportation, land development, urban design, real estate, environmental, institutional, or energy sector.
  • Ability to work on a computer remotely if necessary.
  • Ability to travel locally and complete fieldwork if necessary.
Compensation and Housing

Our best estimate of the hourly salary for this position located in Boston is $20 per hour. VHB does not provide housing for internships.
