Job summary

VHB is seeking a Civil Engineer – Transportation Transit & Rail (Hybrid) in Wethersfield, CT to join our Transportation practice with a focus on rail and transit projects. You will support design teams on stations, track, drainage, and related facilities, delivering technically sound concepts and documents.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; Master’s preferred may substitute for 1 year experience.
• 5-8+ years of professional experience in civil and transit/transportation engineering design.
• Understanding of AREMA practices preferred.
• PE License required.
• CTDOT project experience preferred.
• Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Assist civil design on rail projects including stations, site/civil/drainage, layover/service facilities, and MOE/MOW yards.
• Develop, manage, and maintain project schedules and budgets.
• Assist in development of project deliverables.
• Support the Project Development process including conceptual designs, feasibility studies, planning studies, supporting documentation and quality control.
• Perform inspections, evaluations, and assessments of rail and transit infrastructure; develop specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules.
• Prepare technical reports and analyses.
• Assist in development of construction bid documents.
• Provide design support services during construction.
• Work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-discipline team environment.

Overview

VHB is seeking a Civil Engineer – Transportation Transit & Rail (Hybrid) in Wethersfield, CT to join our growing Transportation practice with a focus on transit and rail projects. The hire will be part of a design engineering team supporting a variety of transportation projects, including railroad and rail/bus transit projects. The candidate should have expertise and experience in the railroad and rail/bus transit industry and a desire to grow in the business.

Responsibilities

• Assist and perform civil design on a variety of rail projects including stations, site/civil/drainage, layover/service/support facilities, bus transit, and maintenance of equipment (MOE) and maintenance of way (MOW) yards
• Develop, manage, and maintain project schedules and budgets
• Assist in development of project deliverables
• Support the Project Development process including preparation of conceptual level designs, feasibility studies, planning studies, supporting documentation and quality control
• Perform inspections, evaluations, and assessments of rail and transit infrastructure; develop specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules
• Prepare technical reports and analyses
• Assist in the development of construction bid documents
• Provide design support services during construction
• Work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-discipline team environment

Skills and Attributes

• Strong understanding of transit and rail infrastructure and multi-discipline system integration
• Technical experience in multiple transit and rail design disciplines (site/civil/drainage, track, rail systems, grade crossings, stations structures, transit facilities, bus transit, route design, right-of-way, clearances)
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Analytical skills
• Strong capability in the use of computer applications including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
• Familiarity with track, station, layover/support/service facilities and general civil engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field of study required; Master’s degree is a plus and may substitute for 1 year of experience
• 5-8+ years of professional experience in civil and transit/transportation engineering design required (focus in transit & rail preferred)
• Understanding of railroad and rail transit design requirements including AREMA recommended practices preferred
• PE License required
• CTDOT project experience preferred
• Experience with the MicroStation CADD platform is preferred, but candidates with AutoCAD experience and the desire to learn MicroStation will be considered
