Job summary

VHB in Springfield, MA is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer with strong design experience to join a growing transportation practice. The role includes developing and evaluating traffic improvements, planning multimodal solutions, and mentoring junior staff, with a hybrid work option and CT project flexibility.

The candidate will lead traffic signal analyses and intersection design, using Synchro, AutoCAD/MicroStation, and Vissim, and must hold a PE license with 5–8 years of related experience.

Qualifications

• 5–8 years of professional transportation/traffic design experience
• Proficiency in Synchro is required
• Proficiency in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD is required
• Vissim modeling capabilities are a plus
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required
• Master’s degree is a plus (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
• PE license is required
• PTOE certification is a plus

Responsibilities

• Develop, analyze and evaluate traffic improvements including traffic signals and roundabouts
• Develop traffic and transportation planning, safety, and engineering solutions for multimodal transportation projects
• Conduct safety engineering analysis with design and operations focus
• Design traffic control devices
• Design work zone traffic control
• Develop intersection design
• Use MUTCD guidance to prepare and oversee traffic signal warrant analyses
• Attend and lead meetings with transportation agencies and private developers
• Prepare and participate in client presentations
• Prepare and review technical memoranda and reports
• Mentor junior team members

Overview

Senior Traffic Engineer - Design | Hybrid

VHB is seeking a strong Senior Traffic Engineer with solid design experience to join our vibrant and growing transportation consulting practice in Connecticut. This is an exciting opportunity to develop, analyze and evaluate traffic improvements, while being involved in transportation planning, safety, and engineering solutions for multimodal transportation projects. There is an option for someone to work from another VHB office to support CT projects, if meeting all qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Develop, analyze and evaluate traffic improvements including traffic signals and roundabouts
• Develop traffic and transportation planning, safety, and engineering solutions for multimodal transportation projects
• Conduct safety engineering analysis, including design and operational focused analysis
• Design traffic control devices
• Design work zone traffic control
• Develop intersection design
• Use guidance within the MUTCD to prepare and oversee traffic signal warrant analyses
• Attend and lead meetings with transportation agencies and private developers
• Prepare and participate in presentations to the client team
• Prepare and review technical memoranda and reports
• Mentor junior team members

Skills & Abilities

• A strong background in traffic engineering and task management
• Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
• Strong writing skills for proposals, technical reports and memoranda
• The ability to balance multiple concurrent assignments
• Final Design Plan Development

Qualifications

• 5-8 years of professional transportation/traffic design engineering experience required, depending on level of education
• Proficiency in Synchro required
• Proficiency in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD required
• Vissim modeling capabilities a plus
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required
• Master’s degree a plus (master’s degree may substitute for 1 year of experience)
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required
• PTOE (Professional Traffic Operations Engineer) certification a plus

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Springfield, MA is $100,000 to $125,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
