Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a Transfer Station Operations Supervisor to manage a productive workforce, enforce safety and regulatory compliance, and optimize transfer station performance.

You will oversee planning, training, and cost controls while ensuring efficient use of personnel and equipment. Ideal candidates have a Bachelor's degree, CDL, and several years in waste operations, with SWANA certification within 60 days.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required with analytical and general management skills.
  • Valid CDL is required.
  • 3+ years experience in the waste industry preferred (landfill/transfer).
  • Combination of education and experience acceptable.
  • Within 60 days of hire, SWANA transfer station operator certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Sustain a productive workforce by screening, hiring, training, and developing staff.
  • Ensure wage and hour compliance and proper compensation per guidelines.
  • Maintain safe working conditions at each site.
  • Develop recognition programs for productive and safe employees.
  • Plan and operate transfer station to optimize personnel and equipment use.
  • Implement cost control practices for supplies and services.
  • Establish preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and costs.
  • Enforce purchase order system and clear procurement guidelines.
  • Lead safety meetings and document attendance and topics.
  • Monitor DOT and drug testing files and compliance.
  • Operate weighing scales and equipment as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sustain a productive and motivated workforce by screening, selecting, hiring, training and developing and evaluating personnel required to meet service commitments.
  • Adhere to all wage and hour laws and compensate personnel for services rendered in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Ensure safe working conditions at each job.
  • Develop recognition program to reward and recognize productive and safe employees.
  • Plan and operate transfer station operations to best utilize personnel and equipment.
  • Develop, implement and maintain on-going cost control program that monitors buying and renting practices of all supplies and services.
  • Develop and implement an effective preventive maintenance program that reduces down time, reduces maintenance costs and results in lowest cost of service possible.
  • Ensure that a purchase order system is used for all purchases and that clear guidelines are established for purchasing practices.
  • Schedule and conduct safety meetings and document attendees and topics covered. Ensure employees follow safety guidelines and perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Monitor and maintain DOT and drug testing files.
  • Operate weighing scale.
  • Operate equipment as necessary.
  • Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state/provincial and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree from four (4) year college or university and/or have a demonstrated record of serving in and operational environment requiring analytical and general management skills.
  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Three (3) or more years experience in the waste industry desired (landfill or transfer operations preferred).
  • Combination of education and/or experience.
  • Possess (within 60 days of hire) a SWANA certified transfer station operator.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the equipment required to operate a landfill.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, instruction and procedure manuals, routing reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
Physical/Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste and smell.
  • Visual Requirements: include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
  • Work in indoor office environment 70% of the time.
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes and airborne particles.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Noise level is usually loud.
