Job Summary The Transfer Advisor serves as a key advocate and strategic partnerfor transfer students, supporting their successful transition andintegration to Morgan State University. This role providescomprehensive advising services to prospective and enrolledtransfer students through a developmental and proactive advisingapproach grounded in the Connected Advising framework. The TransferAdvisor builds meaningful, mutually growth-fostering relationshipswith students while providing guidance on academic requirements,career planning, transfer articulation, and institutional policiesand procedures. The Transfer Advisor maintains systematic contact with adviseesthrough technology platforms, coordinates with internal andexternal partners, and actively participates in recruitment andretention initiatives. This position requires expertise in transferstudent success, relationship-building competencies, and theability to navigate complex transfer credit evaluations andarticulation agreements.
Job Duties
Student Advising and Support (40%)
- Provide individual academic advising to transfer students usingdevelopmental and proactive advising approaches that fostermutually growth-fostering relationships
- Meet with prospective transfer students to discuss courseselection at their home institution and provide pre-matriculationadvising both on-campus, at area community colleges, andvirtually
- Facilitate smooth enrollment transitions by providing initialadvisement, course registration assistance, and general orientationinformation to incoming transfer students
- Assist students in understanding degree requirements, academicpolicies, transfer credit evaluation, and progress toward degreecompletion
- Support students with academic planning, course selection, andcareer exploration aligned with their educational goals andidentified strengths
- Utilize advising technologies (DegreeWorks, Schedule Planner,EAB Navigate 360, TES ) to monitor academic progress, preparereports, and document all advising interactions
- Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees throughmultiple communication channels and early alert systems
- Refer students to specialized campus resources forcomprehensive counseling, financial aid, disability services,tutoring, career development, and wellness support to minimizetransfer shock
- Implement appreciative advising techniques to help studentsidentify strengths, set goals, and develop action plans foracademic success
Partnership Development and Collaboration (25%)
- Serve as an information resource and strategic liaison to theCommunity College Partnership Manager regarding current andprospective MOU and articulation agreement partners
- Maintain knowledge of transfer articulation agreements, statetransfer policies, Maryland ARTSYS system, and institutionaltransfer requirements
- Build and sustain intentional relationships with advisors,faculty, and staff at community college partner institutions
- Collaborate with university schools, colleges, and divisionstakeholders to develop communication strategies and enhancevisibility of transfer student services
- Coordinate with the Office of Admissions, Office of theRegistrar, School/College Transfer Coordinators, and departmentchairs regarding transfer student cohorts and creditevaluations
- Foster partnerships with faculty advisors to ensure seamlessadvising transitions when transfer students meet departmentaladvising criteria
Student Engagement and Leadership (20%)
- Serve as advisor for the Morgan Transfer Alliance studentorganization and co-advisor for Tau Sigma National Transfer HonorSociety
- Plan, facilitate, or support transfer-specific programming,workshops, and events that promote academic success, campusintegration, and community building
- Participate actively in campus recruitment events, includingopen houses, transfer visit days, college fairs, and orientationprograms
- Provide regular updates to the Senior Program Coordinator andProgram Coordinator on student status, advising outcomes, andprogrammatic needs
- Support Alternative Admission Program students by serving as aresource to the Program Coordinator and ensuring appropriatesupport services
Assessment, Reporting, and Professional Development (15%)
- Prepare enrollment, retention, persistence, and assessmentreports using institutional data systems and advisingplatforms
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of alladvising sessions, student interactions, and outcomes in EABNavigate 360
- Contribute to program assessment and accreditation efforts asneeded
- Engage in continuous professional development throughself-directed reading, professional organization involvement (NACADA ), conferences, workshops, and training sessions
- Participate in departmental meetings, university committees,and collaborative initiatives that advance transfer studentsuccess
- Stay current on best practices in transfer advising,equity-minded advising, or student development theory
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, student affairs, ora related field required
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in highereducation, including experience in college/university admissions,academic advising, student services, or related academic areas
- Demonstrated understanding of the unique challenges andexperiences faced by transfer and first-year students with collegecredits
- Experience with federal, state, and higher education policiesand procedures

- Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs,counseling, education, or related field
- Professional training or certification in academic advising(e.g., NACADA certificate programs)
- Experience working specifically with transfer studentpopulations and familiarity with transfer transitionchallenges
- Knowledge of curricula and accreditation standards forinternational and U.S. institutions
- Experience with peer advising, mentoring programs, or studentorganization advising
- Understanding of institutional data, assessment methodologies,and data-driven decision-making related to strategic enrollment andretention goals
- Familiarity with Connected Advising, Appreciative Advising,Strengths-Based Advising, or other contemporary advisingframeworks
- Bilingual or multilingual communication skills

- Experience with higher education enterprise studentapplications and student information systems, such as EllucianBanner SIS or comparable platforms
- Familiarity with transfer evaluation systems (e.g.,CollegeSource TES, Maryland ARTSYS )
- Proficiency with advising technologies (e.g., EAB Navigate,DegreeWorks)
- Competency with cloud-based document management systems (e.g.,Google Suite, Microsoft Office 365)
- Experience with CRM systems, email management platforms, andproject management tools (e.g., Hiver, Smartsheet)
Other Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation fortravel.
- Ability and willingness to travel locally and attendconferences, including occasional evening and weekendcommitments
