Job summary

Cal State East Bay is seeking a dedicated Admissions Counselor to process and evaluate freshman, transfer, and graduate applications. You will focus on domestic U.S.

residents, coordinate eligibility determinations, and communicate admission requirements to diverse audiences. Under supervision of senior staff, you will advise applicants on policies, guide them through the process, and collaborate with campus offices to recruit and enroll students.

Salary Range: $5,083.00 per month to $7,228.00 per month. PLEASENOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualificationsand experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,083.00per month to $6,156.00 per month.

About the Position

The Office of Admission processes and evaluates applications at thefreshman, transfer, and graduate student levels focusing primarilyon domestic U.S. residents. The office provides some support forthe processing of International applications. The Office worksclosely with Cal State East Bay staff, faculty, and members of thecommunity-at-large. Admission staff process applications andrelated documents, determine residency, render admission decisions,and proactively communicate with students in an accurate, timelyand efficient manner.

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director ofAdmission and supervising Associate/Assistant Directors, theAdmission Counselor positions coordinate the processing,evaluation, and advising of applicants for assigned groups.Counselors must follow a wide and complex range of relevantpolicies when making final admissions decisions. The positions arealso responsible for advising on Admission requirements, policiesand procedures to various audiences including prospectivestudents/applicants, high school/community college counselors,faculty and staff. Working with other East Bay offices, counselorsalso participate in the campus-wide effort to recruit prospectivestudents as well as supporting the transition of admittedapplicants to enrolled students.

Responsibilities

Process Transfer Student Applications

• Obtain all required information to determine eligibility usingelectronically submitted application data and transcriptinformation.
• Assess and interpret self-reported applicant information andacademic records for determination of eligibility foradmission.
• Independently solve problems with individual applications byobtaining additional information from applicants, counselors,faculty and staff.
• Interpret and apply policies to unusual cases and determinewhen to refer unusual cases to supervisors.
• Plan the processing and evaluation for an assigned portion ofthe total applicant pool prioritizing work for different terms ofentry simultaneously.
• Verify admitted applicants' eligibility for enrollment.

Evaluate Academic Documents and make Final AdmissionsDecisions

• Evaluate applications according to all applicable policies forCSU Eligibility and make final admissions decisions, includingcalculation of total college units, calculation of overall GPA andRequired GE Courses.
• Evaluate individual college transcriptions for completion oftransferable units, required GE Courses and GPA.
• Independently evaluate transfer credit for current andprospective applicants from test scores and/or accreditedinstitutions.
• Interpret transcript information and update student recordsregarding University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) asappropriate.
• Independently assess completion of additional specific courserequirements for impacted majors or special programs.

Advise students on admission requirements, policy andprocedure

• Advise prospective applicants regarding application processingand eligibility requirements.
• Communicate with applicant populations in individual and smallgroup settings both on and off campus.
• Communicate admission requirements to educational counselors asneeded.
• Counsel denied applicants regarding options andalternatives.
• Participate in campus events including Preview Day, WelcomeDay, Orientation, and related activities.
• Identify potential candidates who would benefit fromparticipation in special admission programs.
• Following general CSU and campus policies for the assignment oftransfer credit, determine and advise on requirements outside ofthe major that transfer courses fulfill.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

• The equivalent of two (2) years of professional experience inone of the student services program areas or in a relatedfield.
• Experience should give evidence of competence and indicate thepotential for further growth.
• A Master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted forone year of professional experience.

Education

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or universityin one of the behavioral sciences, public or businessadministration or a job‑related field.
• Additional specialized experience during which the applicanthas acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilitiesshown above may be substituted for the required education on ayear‑for‑year basis.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activitiesof the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methodsand problems of organizational and program management.
• General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and ofthe principles of individual and group behavior.
• Ability to interpret and apply program rules andregulations.
• Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignmentsand in implementing long-range program improvements.
• Obtain factual and interpretive information throughinterviews.
• Reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate dataand make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
• Advise students individually and in groups on routine matterswhere required.
• Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi‑aged valuesystems and work accordingly.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships withfaculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private andpublic agencies and others in committee work, and student advisingand community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge ofthe overall operation, functions and programs of the campus towhich assigned.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry throughactions having implications with regard to other program or serviceareas Services Office.
