Job summary

City of Lynchburg is seeking a Training Coordinator for the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Under supervision of the Academy Director, you will assist in policy development, program planning, and training delivery across basic and in-service curricula.

The role requires substantial criminal justice experience, an undergraduate degree, and DCJS instructor certifications. You will coordinate schedules, supervise trainees, manage records, and liaise with public safety agencies.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree is required; supervision experience is highly desired.
  • DCJS general instructor certification and specialty DCJS certifications are highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and update training curriculum for basic and in-service training.
  • Develop schedules for basic and in-service classes.
  • Supervise and guide basic students during their training period.
  • Document both the completion and failure of students to meet minimum training standards.
  • Schedule and ensure adequate instructor coverage for classes.
  • Ensure basic level classes comply with all Commonwealth mandates.
  • Maintain knowledge of current training documentation and record maintenance.
  • Instruct basic and in-service personnel in mandated curriculum.
  • Supervise out-of-town in-services and basic training to ensure standards are met.
  • Act as liaison for the Academy and member agencies.
  • Maintain Academy equipment and ensure proper operation.
  • Order and maintain stock of training items.
  • Maintain student Chromebook supply and Google drive updates.
  • Maintain knowledge of Academy policy.
  • Keep management advised of pertinent business matters.
  • Receive and analyze comments on course material and instructors.
  • Conduct physical training with active participation; maintain Lawfit or equivalent certification.
  • Maintain contact with Criminal Justice Agencies to understand training needs.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.
  • Issue all certification documents for specialized training in First Aid and CPR/AED.
  • Maintain and utilize Academy ACE tracking and testing program and administer exams.
  • Attend all student graduations and assist as needed.
  • Arrange and proctor Fit for Duty quizzes and Constitution quizzes.
  • Attend outside development training as directed.
  • Achieve and maintain specialty instructor status (firearms, defensive tactics, or defensive driving).
  • Specialize in a core curriculum for basic training and instruct as primary instructor.
  • Review and re-test materials with basic classes after exams.
  • Review and document instructor performance yearly.

The Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy is seeking a Training Coordinator. Under the supervision of the Academy Director, the Training Coordinator aids the Assistant Director and the Academy Director in the performance of their duties by carrying out responsibilities as assigned. This will include in-depth research involving recommendations for policy needs, application of established policy, rules and regulations and related duties as required.

  • Plan, develop and update training curriculum for basic and in-service training and keep the Assistant Director and Director informed of recommended revision, if any
  • Develop schedules for basic and in-service classes.
  • Supervise and guide basic students during their training period.
  • Document both the completion and failure of students to meet minimum training standards.
  • Schedule and ensure adequate instructor coverage for classes being taught on an as needed basis.
  • Ensure basic level classes comply with all Commonwealth mandates.
  • Maintain knowledge of current training documentation and record maintenance required by the Academy and apply to all training events conducted by Academy.
  • Instruct basic and in-service personnel in mandated curriculum.
  • Supervise out-of-town in-services and basic level training, up to one week in length, to ensure required standards are met and that needed equipment is available.
  • Act as liaison for the Academy and member agencies as well as outside agencies.
  • Maintain various Academy equipment and ensure proper operation.
  • Order and maintain stock of both permanent and expendable training items.
  • Maintain student Chromebook supply and keep the Google drive updated.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of Academy policy on all matters.
  • Keep Academy management advised of pertinent business matters pertaining to Academy affairs.
  • Receive and analyze comments and suggestions on course material and instructors.
  • Conduct physical training with active participation in all phases. Must maintain Lawfit certification and/or other physical fitness certification as approved by the Director.
  • Maintain personal contact with Criminal Justice Agencies to establish rapport and gain awareness of their training needs.
  • Perform any other special tasks assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.
  • Responsible for issuing all certification documents for specialized training in areas of First Aid and CPR/AED.
  • Maintain and utilize Academy ACE tracking and testing program and administer exams.
  • Attend all student graduations and assist as needed in conducting graduations.
  • Arrange and proctor students Fit for Duty quizzes and Constitution quiz.
  • Attend outside development training as directed by the Assistant Director or Executive Director.
  • Achieve, maintain and utilize specialty instructor status such as firearms, defensive tactics or defensive driving.
  • Specialize in a core curriculum for basic training and instruct as primary instructor.
  • Review material that is to be re-tested with basic classes after each exam.
  • Review and document instructor performance in basic class curriculum on a yearly basis in the fall.
  • Ensures all instructors are certified to instruct according to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) prior to teaching.
  • Each Friday, submit the weekly training schedule and sign such that PowerPoints and lesson plans are archived according to the Library of Virginia.
  • Each Friday, submit signed documentation that all lesson plans have been reviewed by the DCJS certified instructor and signed by that instructor prior to instructing.
  • Counsel basic students based upon their conduct and/or activities during training.
  • Enters instructors training hours each week in the Excel spreadsheet to track agency training hours.
  • Ensures each student has submitted an entry level physical prior to training in the basic school that is in compliance with DCJS.
  • Ensures each student signs the rules & regulations for all basic schools, medication inquiry form, cell phone policy, defensive tactics/firearms/defensive driving/physical training safety rules, etc. that is required by DCJS.
QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City policy required.

Must have good communication skills, both oral and written. A thorough knowledge of the use of English language and form is essential. Sound working knowledge of computer systems and operation is needed. Must have the ability to exercise independent judgement with good administrative, management and interpersonal skills.
