Trainee Skilled Highway Construction Laborer

Job Summary
Per PENNDOT OJT Manual - Skilled Highway Construction Laborer (90.13). Develop all skills required to perform as a member of the labor crew under the supervision of the Laborer Foreman. Tasks include reading roadway plans, using hand and power tools, installing erosion and sediment control measures, maintaining traffic safety, handling concrete pipes, asphalt patching and compaction, and road grading. Performs other duties as directed by the Foreman.

• Traffic maintenance procedures
• Equipment care
• Erosion and sediment control measures
• Material delivery procedures
• Asphalt patching and compacting

Hiring Considerations:

• Minimum of 18 years old
• Demonstrates reasonable intelligence for technical tasks
• Shows interest and aptitude in the craft
• Possesses a valid license (e.g., equipment operator, truck driver)
• Not currently in a training program leading to journeyperson status or employed as a journeyman
• Not quit three times from a trainee position (case-by-case review possible)

Physical Requirements:

• Good health or ability to pass a pre-job physical

Special Provisions (TSPs) #1999-9999: Training aimed at developing candidates toward full journeymen, with emphasis on minorities and women, and documentation of ethnic claim if necessary.
