Job Summary
Per PENNDOT OJT Manual - Skilled Highway Construction Laborer (90.13)
Develop all skills required to perform as a member of the labor crew under the supervision of the Laborer Foreman. Responsibilities include reading roadway plans, using hand and power tools, installing erosion and sediment control measures, maintaining traffic safety, handling concrete pipes, asphalt patching, road grading, and other related duties as directed.
Skills to be learned
- Reading and understanding roadway plans and drawings.
- Assisting the foreman and crew with various tasks.
- Proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools.
- Traffic maintenance and protection procedures.
- Handling and installation of erosion and sediment control measures.
- Material delivery and asphalt patching procedures.
- Road grading techniques.
Hiring Considerations
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Demonstrated technical aptitude and interest in the craft.
- Valid license (e.g., equipment operator, truck driver, or highway).
- Not enrolled in or completed a journeyperson training program in the same classification.
- Eligibility may be affected if the applicant has quit the program three times.
Physical Requirements
- Good health or ability to pass a pre-job physical.
