Job summary

The City of Dallas is seeking a Police Officer Trainee to join the Dallas Police Department. This temporary trainee classification qualifies and trains candidates for permanent Police Officer positions, including a 32-week Basic Training Course at the Dallas Police Academy and subsequent department-specific instruction.

Candidates must meet the qualifications listed, including age range, driving record, and either college credits, law enforcement experience, a TCOLE license, or military service.

Qualifications

• Applicant must be at least 19.5 years old and under 45 on the civil service exam date.
• Must have a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Military service requires honorable or uncharacterized discharge as indicated on separation documents.
• Must meet one of the following qualifications: A–E.
• A) 45 semester hours with a C average or better.
• B) 36 months full-time certified law enforcement experience with a city, county, or state agency.
• C) active, valid Texas Basic Peace Officer license.
• D) 36 months active service in the U.S. Armed Forces with honorable/uncharacterized discharge.
• E) at least 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED and 36 months full-time employment.
• No felony or class A misdemeanor convictions; no class B misdemeanor in last 10 years.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and be physically/medically able to perform duties.

Responsibilities

• Attend a 32-week Basic Training Course at the Dallas Police Academy.
• After licensing, receive Dallas PD-specific training including city ordinances and real-life situations.
• Perform related duties and special projects as required.
• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
