Train Conductor Job Description

Location: Garibaldi, OR
Seasonal (Full Time During Summer, Part Time Spring/Fall) Non Exempt
Position reports to: Operations Supervisor

Rate of Pay: $17.00-$19.00/hr DOE

Position Purpose:

The primary job of the Conductor at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is to safely direct train movements and work as a team with engine crew, car hosts and ticket agents to ensure the safety and well‑being of the passengers, fellow crew members and people trackside.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure the safe operation/administration of OCSR excursion train, following all railroad rules, safety regulations and company polices.
  • Coordinate with the Locomotive Engineer, Ticket Agents and Car Hosts and other train crew members to manage departures, arrivals, and en‑route operations.
  • Be jointly responsible for control of the train by leading the daily job brief and ensuring that all crew members are informed of any restrictions, conditions, or other special instructions that pertain to the day’s work.
  • Perform daily inspections and air tests on assigned consist, identifying defects and reporting them to the applicable supervisors.
  • Provide supervisory oversight, in coordination with Shift Leads, for Car Hosts and Ticket Agents in order to achieve a welcoming, clean and safe environment for guests.
  • Check and collect tickets, verify passenger information, assist with seating and check‑in when necessary, and provide boarding/accessibility assistance to guests.
  • Provide announcements regarding boarding procedures, stops, delays, and safety rule enforcement.
  • Monitor onboard conditions and address any emergencies or service disruptions with professionalism and a safety minded attitude.
  • Complete required reports and documentation related to trips, delays, or incidents.
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance, dressing in accordance with OCSR’s dress code for Conductors.

  • Arriving to work on time and ready for duty.
  • Neat and clean appearance adhering to the dress code.
  • Complies with and enforces all current OCSR policies and procedures.
  • Effectiveness at ensuring work is completed on time and to the standards of the railroad by themselves and the crew they are working with.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the rest of the staff.
  • Timely reporting of concerns and issues to Shift Leads or the Operations Supervisor so that they can be addressed in an efficient manner.
  • Courteous and efficient relations with guests.
  • Good problem‑solving skills that are consistent with OCSR policies and procedures.
  • Proper handling and treatment of company property.
  • Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Previous railroad experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of or ability to obtain and maintain knowledge of applicable CFR Part 49 regulations pertaining to railroad operations.
  • Must be able to carry out both written and verbal instructions.
  • Must have the ability to communicate with team members and work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to work in fast paced environment and respond to unplanned events and circumstances.
  • Strong verbal, written and communication skills.
  • Ability to pass drug/alcohol prescreening and continued drug testing.
  • Valid driver license with no DUI/DWI offenses.

Work Conditions:

  • Work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Work weekends periodically, or other non‑traditional hours as needed.
  • Regular interactions and work with management, staff, guests, members of the public, and officials.
  • Frequent need for wearing and enforcing the use of PPE.
  • Exposure in a shop and field setting with oil, soot, dust, paint, noise, dust, irritants, moving mechanical parts and equipment.

  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, push, pull, sit, reach, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 85 pounds infrequently. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force constantly.
  • Ability to step on and off equipment safely (either standing or moving) and work and balance from ladders to perform tasks.
  • Ability to walk the length of trains on uneven ground and safely ride the side of railcars.
