Job summary

Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is seeking a Locomotive Engineer to operate historic steam and diesel locomotives in Garibaldi, OR. Responsibilities include ensuring safe operation, conducting inspections, performing light maintenance, and assisting in delivering a great passenger experience. Candidates must have at least 2 years of railroad experience and steam locomotive expertise is preferred. This is a seasonal full-time role in a dynamic outdoor environment, offering pay between $20.00-$23.00/hr DOE.

Locomotive Engineer Job Description

Location: Garibaldi, OR
Seasonal (Full Time During Summer, Part Time Spring/Fall) Non-Exempt
Position reports to: Operations Supervisor

Rate of Pay: $20.00-$23.00/hr DOE

Position Purpose:

The Locomotive Engineer at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is responsible for the safe operation of our historic steam and diesel locomotives, as well as light maintenance and daily inspections of assigned locomotives. Working as part of a coordinated team with the Locomotive Fireman, the Conductor, and other train crew, the Locomotive Engineer ensures that the locomotive operates efficiently and safely to deliver engaging passenger experience.

Essential Duties: The Locomotive Engineer is required to:

• Ensure the safe operation of OCSR locomotives, following all railroad rules, safety regulations and company polices.
• Perform some hostling tasks and light maintenance tasks to prepare the steam locomotive for operation.
• Perform required daily safety checks, inspections and job briefings.
• The engineer shall work as a team with the conductor and the fireman (in the case of steam) and other train crew members to ensure safe and efficient operation of the train at all times.
• Periodically lubricate the locomotive and perform checks at servicing stops to ensure the locomotive is operating as intended.
• Take great care in handling the train smoothly to provide a safe and enjoyable ride for guests.
• Be jointly responsible for control of the train by keeping note of any restrictions, conditions, or other special instructions that pertain to the day’s work.
• Monitor onboard conditions and locomotive gauges to ensure the locomotive is operating as desired.
• Observe track conditions and possible obstacles when the train is moving, and address any emergencies or service disruptions with calmness, professionalism and a safety minded attitude.
• Ensure proper shutdown of the locomotive at the end of the day’s work.
• Complete required reports and documentation related to trips, delays, or incidents.
• Maintain uniformed appearance by dressing in accordance with OCSR’s dress code for Locomotive Crew.
• Interact with guests in an engaging and cordial manner.
• Maintain Steam Locomotive Fireman certification and fill other crew positions as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma/GED preferred.

• Must be able to carry out both written and verbal instructions.
• Must have the ability to communicate with team members and work in a team environment.
• Must be able to work in fast paced environment and respond to unplanned events and circumstances.
• Strong verbal, written and communication skills.
• Ability to pass drug/alcohol prescreening and continued drug testing.
• Valid driver license with no DUI/DWI offenses.

Work Conditions:

• Work outside in all weather conditions.
• Work weekends periodically, or other non-traditional hours as needed.
• Regular interactions and work with management, staff, guests, members of the public, and officials.
• Frequent need for wearing PPE.
• Exposure in a shop and field setting with oil, soot, dust, paint, noise, dust, irritants, moving mechanical parts and equipment.
• Exposure to consistently hot temperatures in the cab of the locomotive.

Physical Demands

• Ability to frequently stand, walk, push, pull, sit, reach, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 85 pounds infrequently. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force constantly.
• Ability to step on and off equipment safely (either standing or moving) and work and balance from ladders to perform tasks.
• Ability to safely climb on top of and under the locomotive for daily maintenance tasks, safety checks and occasional repairs.
