Job summary

Norfolk Southern is hiring conductors to safely move freight trains. You’ll build trains, couple railcars, deliver to customers, and complete inspections. No prior railroad experience required; comprehensive training is provided.

This is a seniority-based role on the extra board with on-call shifts, 24/7 readiness, and frequent travel away from home. You’ll join a union within 60 days and begin training at the Norfolk Southern Training Center, supported by accommodations and meal stipends.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to report to work within 90 minutes.
• Clean driving record in the past 36 months, without suspensions or drug/alcohol incidents.
• Must not have been involved in diversion, probation, or guilty to a drug/alcohol driving incident.
• Must not have refused a drug/alcohol test for motor vehicle operation.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling, drawing bar alignment, hand brakes, and railcar riding.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate FRA/commercial safety documentation.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
