Job summary

Barnhart Crane & Rigging is seeking an Trailer Mechanic to support our Heavy Haul Group across North America. The role focuses on hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of hydraulic trailers and specialized equipment used for oversized loads.

You will troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems, read schematics, and travel extensively to job sites and projects. A strong safety mindset and OTR readiness are essential for success.

Qualifications

• 3-5+ years of experience maintaining trailers, heavy equipment, diesel equipment, or hydraulic systems.
• Strong mechanical and hydraulic troubleshooting skills.
• Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems.
• Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively in an over-the-road (OTR) role.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on hydraulic trailers, multi-axle trailer systems, and specialized heavy haul equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
• Diagnose issues with steering systems, suspension systems, braking systems, and hydraulic components.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns in the field and support active heavy haul transportation projects.
• Conduct preventative maintenance and inspections to maximize equipment reliability.
• Assist with trailer assembly, configuration, and mobilization for oversized and super load transports.
• Utilize tablets, maintenance software, and service documentation to track repairs and equipment history.
• Travel extensively throughout North America supporting the Heavy Haul Group and customer projects.

What You’ll Do

What You Bring

We're looking for mechanics who are hands‑on, dependable, and thrive in challenging field environments.

Required:

• 3-5+ years of experience maintaining trailers, heavy equipment, diesel equipment, or hydraulic systems
• Strong mechanical and hydraulic troubleshooting skills
• Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems
• Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics
• Mechanically inclined with a strong problem-solving mindset
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively in an over-the-road (OTR) role
• Ability to work independently while supporting a team-oriented operation
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

Preferred:

• Experience with hydraulic platform trailers, dual-lane trailers, or multi-axle transport systems
• Experience supporting heavy haul, specialized transportation, or oversize load operations
• CDL Class A license
• Welding and fabrication experience
• Knowledge of axle alignments, steering systems, suspension systems, and load securement equipment
• Experience with hydraulic power units and trailer steering systems

Additional Expectations:

• Ability to work day/night shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Ability to travel extensively throughout North America
• Willingness to respond to field service calls and equipment breakdowns
• Commitment to safety, quality, and customer service

Work Environment
